Soils Manufacturing & Compost Operations Lead or Lead II

Job Summary

The Soils Manufacturing and Compost Operations Supervisor Lead, and Lead II is responsible for building engineered soils, managing the composting program, and managing recycling center operations. 

He/she recognizes that high quality soils and compost promote healthy plant growth and establish the foundation for beautiful and useful landscapes across the BYU campus.  They supervise recycling operations to ensure effective recycling collection, processing, and shipping.

Essential Functions

Manage the Material Handling Area (MHA) Operations

  • Responsible for quality and safety in all operations of job. Assure safety of employees and operations in work area.
  • Procure materials through vendors and suppliers.
  • Manage compost operations.
  • Manage recycling operations.
  • Operate all equipment in a safe/effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage. 
  • Act in a respectful and professional manner with all students, BYU, Church and MTC employees, and campus visitors.

Heavy Equipment Operation

  • Operate loader, trommel screen and stacker to construct soils
  • Operate and maintain compost top-turner
  • Operate waste removal trucks (CDL license required) to transport solid waste

Design and enhance campus soils

  • Procure appropriate soil components, schedule pick-up or delivery, direct soil production, ensure soil quality, establish pricing working within established budgetary parameters, oversee loading and delivery to produce soils that promote healthy plant growth and support water conservation across the entire campus.
  • Consult with BYU Grounds Department and Physical Facility civil engineers to determine campus soil needs.
  • Manage soil sampling and testing.
  • Determine soil specifications.
  • Design treatments to enhance underperforming soils.

Manage compost operations

  • Manage a team of workers to effectively compost campus green waste ensuring that the composting process meets industry standards and produces a high-quality product.
  • Take and analyze compost measurements to ensure proper composting.

Manage recycling operations

  • Manage a team of workers who collect, sort, bale, and ship recycling.
  • Participate in recycling sorting and shipping as needed. 
  • Operate recycling collection trucks.

Training and Safety

  • Train employees in workplace, yard, and equipment safety.
  • Train employees to properly sample soils and run soil tests.

Snow Removal

  • On call work to remove snow from walks, stairs, roads and parking lots to provide safe walking and driving conditions.

Other responsibilities as assigned

  • Respond to unscheduled daily shop requests which vary in nature and urgency.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Management.
  • May require on-call work assignments.

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required: B.S. in horticulture, soil science or related field or equivalent years of experience/2+ years full-time in landscape management, environmental science, or heavy equipment operation or in related fields.

Preferred: B.S. in horticulture, soil science or related field or equivalent years of experience/5+ years full-time in landscape management, environmental science, or heavy equipment operation or in related fields.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses:

  • Applicable supervisory and training skills
  • Effective project management, including good record keeping.
  • Adhere to and train others in safety guidelines.
  • Operate heavy equipment: hook trucks, loaders, trommel screen, grinder, recycling baler.
  • Sound understanding of soil science, applied soil physics, horticulture, and soil mechanics.
  • Sound understanding of soil testing concepts and techniques.
  • Understanding the role of texture, structure, particle size distribution and organic content in horticultural soils

Approximate Starting Salary: Lead: $55,000 - $71,500 

Lead II: $61,500 - $80,000
