Job Description:

The Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric & Earth Science is seeking a Software Developer to augment the ongoing development of satellite management tools and the creation of new internal applications used in the operations management and image processing functions of the Center. The Software Development Engineer position involves a wide range of software design and development activities within a highly dynamic environment supporting a variety of remote-sensing discovery and analysis programs.​ The ideal candidate will bring innovative ideas to enhance the CSTARS end-user Web experience, while applying established development methodologies throughout a project’s lifecycle. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be able to devise heuristic solutions to further the use of remote sensing data in responding to real-world scenarios, and wrap successful solutions within an operational application framework.

The ideal candidate will have the desire and ability to provide significant impact for both the evolution & enhancement of deployed systems, and the research & development for emerging systems. The developer in this position researches, designs, and develops computer software and application systems for CSTARS satellite operations. Position requires the ability to characterize the operations and recognize ways to automate manual or frequently-performed functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performance

  • Software system architecture analysis and design

  • Software development, testing, integration and debugging

Communications, Relationships and Service

  • English fluent written and spoken, another language would be an advantage.

  • Communicates frequently and effectively with all CSTARS staff in a timely manner regarding procedures, as well as other necessary information.

  • When possible, participates in teams within and outside CSTARS to provide improved and enhanced services to CSTARS and the Customer Community.

Other duties and special projects as assigned

  • May perform presentations and conduct training courses relevant to improved satellite management tool.

  • Assists with special CSTARS projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent technical degree in a related field of study.

  • Minimum of three (3+) or more years of directly related software programming work experience.

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and relevant GIS, satellite processing, image analysis and interpretation experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

  • Proficiency in Windows and LINUX operating systems.

  • The job requires very strong programming and debugging skills.

  • Experience and thorough knowledge with HTML/CSS, TypeScript/JavaScript, C#, and SQL as required. Python, Matlab, Java, and Groovy (highly desirable).

  • Be able to travel occasionally to project and educational meetings and trade shows.

  • Knowledge of file and text transfer protocols as well as text and image file manipulation.
