Job Summary

Under the direction of technology team leadership, the incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the primary web application and relational database supporting the research programs of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, a dynamic multidisciplinary clinical research program investigating neurodegenerative diseases; the application environment is an open source Java web-based architecture with a MySQL database; participate in a team-wide effort to migrate the primary research web application to a new platform; duties will include, but are not limited to, requirements gathering, application design, data modeling, coding, documentation, testing, data conversion, import/export, systems integration, and bug fixing; work in a team environment and collaborate with lead developers, data liaison, IT administrators and technology leadership to meet the overall technical needs of the center; perform other duties as assigned; exhibit effective communication and interpersonal skills with stakeholders and subject matter experts, including faculty and program managers; be comfortable with changes to direction and following the leadership of the product owner; have a focus on user sensibilities; have an easy going attitude with a clear communication style. This role will report to the Director of Technical Operations.

Department Description

The UCSF Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is an internationally renowned clinical research center with over 200 full-time employees with offices and clinical research space located in the Sandler Neurosciences Building, the Weill Institute for Neurosciences, and other buildings on the UCSF Mission Bay Campus. The MAC is an interdisciplinary team of neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuroscientists, genetic counselors, nurses, social workers, administrators, and technologists. Our mission is to provide the highest quality of clinical care for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease processes, to conduct research on causes and cures for degenerative brain diseases, and to educate health professionals, patients, and their families. From this clinical population, external referrals, and direct recruitment efforts, we enroll patients into more than 50 structured research protocols and/or treatment trials.  We are a California Alzheimer’s Research Center and a federal Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.     

The MAC's technology team has been an integral part of the Memory and Aging Center since its inception.  We provide technology and solutions directly in support of the mission of our center, in research, patient care, and education. 


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering and a minimum of three years of experience or equivalent experience/training.
  • Intermediate knowledge of secure software development.
  • Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation, and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with management regularly.
  • Thorough experience with the identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
  • Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated software repository skills. Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Thorough experience with common programming tools. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated broad problem-solving skills.
  • Expert knowledge of Java
  • Strong relational database skills/knowledge of SQL
  • Object-relational mapping experience (e.g. Hibernate)
  • Experience with Javascript, HTML, CSS, JSP (JSTL tags)
  • Experience Java Servlet Specification and servlet containers (Apache Tomcat preferred)
  • Experience with Python programming.
  • Experience using and implementing API’s.
  • Experience with Python web applications
  • Experience with Vue.js / Quasar or other similar front-end frameworks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Spring Framework (Spring MVC, Spring Webflow)
  • Experience with the Django web framework.
  • Experience with Docker containers
  • Knowledge of and experience with agile, scrum development practices
  • Working with Protected Health Information (PHI), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and familiarity with HIPAA.
  • Experience with developing user documentation and providing both one-on-one and formal user training
