Job Description

ASU, a leading innovator in higher education, recognized by US News and World Report for the last 6 years in a row as the most innovative university, has an immediate opening for a Software Defined Networking (SDN) Engineer. ASU is seeking to hire networking engineers who are excited about infrastructure as code and are looking to build the network of the future. This position requires the desired candidate to either have tangible experience with writing in automation/orchestration platforms (e.g. Python, Ansible) or the candidate must demonstrate the propensity for designing and building networks through code. ASU seeks a network engineer who is flexible in their thinking when it comes to networking solutions and be prepared to work on multiple networking platforms. Our ideal candidate will be comfortable with design, build and support activities related to creating and maintaining enterprise networking solutions. This position will be expected to be available in an on-call capacity.

As with everyone in the UTO family, our intentional focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as well as culture and communications are core responsibilities in this role. With an increased emphasis on authenticity, compassion, and inclusivity, this position strives to embody and advance our UTO Positive Core.

Essential Duties

We are looking for results driven individuals that strives for excellence, enjoy the challenges of a fast paced environment and the desire to make a difference. More specifically, we are looking for talented networking professionals to design, develop, deploy, support and monitor state-of-the-art network solutions (WAN, CAN, LAN, DCN, and wireless communications solutions) that are currently and will soon be deployed across ASU worldwide. The SDN Network Engineer will design and implement the enhancements and future capabilities for the future network at ASU. In this role you will apply engineering best practices to analyze, design, develop, deploy, and support network infrastructure-as-code in an enterprise environment. You will serve operational needs within the enterprise and may occasionally be required to serve in an on-call capacity. You will provide subject matter expertise in the following areas of network technology, including SDN, spine leaf architecture, routing/switching, MPLS, BGP, VXLAN, EVPN and data center architecture. Additionally, you will lead projects to define and implement network infrastructure in support of enterprise needs. This position will report into the Engineering team and is not a supervisory role.

The following will be necessary in the candidate's daily activities:

  • Experience with design, provisioning, and troubleshooting of WAN and LAN connectivity technologies (i.e. MPLS, LACP)
  • Experience with Campus Area Network technologies (Wi-Fi, PoE, 802.1x)
  • Experience with coding/scripting/automation/orchestration platforms(Python, Ansible), including interfacing with APIs
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills, especially the ability to articulate advanced technical topics to both technical and non-technical staff

The SDN Network Engineer takes responsibility for fostering culture, advancing our values, and championing engagement in all its forms -- collaborating across our teams as well as participating in UTO/ASU events and programs, demonstrates commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment, and advances our UTO Affirmative Pledge.
