Position Description
The Office of Dental Education (ODE) oversees all educational programs within the School, including predoctoral education, advanced graduate education, and continuing education. The Office provides opportunities for learning, leadership development, and research by providing a high level of support and service. ODE also coordinates orientation, commencement, and a wide range of activities related to student life. The members of the Office of Dental Education are committed to supporting and assisting students as they progress through their programs at HSDM.
The Harvard School of Dental Medicine is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Society Director in the School’s innovative DMD curriculum. This is a full-time faculty appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the appropriate academic department based on successful candidate’s area of expertise. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.
Society Directors are responsible for managing the education of predoctoral dental students. They engage in preclinical, clinical, and didactic teaching, and also serve as directors for predoctoral courses. Additional responsibilities include committee service and other administrative duties. Assignment of these program responsibilities is based on individual interests and the unique abilities of the individual.
The Society Director will serve as mentor, facilitator, coach and teacher in a multi-disciplinary educational environment, including liaising with Harvard Medical School Advisory Deans. Emphasis will be on didactic and pre-clinical performance, and preparation to begin clinical activities, as well as treatment planning with students across the clinical years.
HSDM offers a unique interdisciplinary environment for teaching, research, and clinical activity. Full time appointment consists of four days as Society Director plus one day for patient care, research, and/or other administrative activity.

Basic Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a DMD or DDS degree and have broad experience in the disciplines of general dentistry. Experience in teaching, particularly lecturing and developing courses or course materials and an overall understanding of the predoctoral curriculum, is required, as is experience in research and scholarship.
Additional Qualifications
Experience in an educational setting, managerial experience in a group practice setting, computer literacy, and experience with computerized clinic management systems are strongly preferred. Advanced specialty training while not required is preferred. Candidates must be eligible for dental licensure in Massachusetts to participate in clinical practice.
