Summary

This position is for a social worker in all areas of the Emergency Department including: Children's Emergency, Adult Emergency, and the Medical Short Stay Units, employees will be cross-trained to cover all services listed.

8 and 12 hour shifts - days, evenings, and midnights with heavy weekend focus. This is a 0.75 FTE appointment.

Responsibilities*
  • The ability to provide high-level interventions while also meeting basic tangible and concrete needs is required. Social Work services include but are not limited to the following:
  • Crisis intervention
  • Family support and counseling
  • Liaison and referral to community agencies
  • Mental health assessments
  • Tangible resources
  • Participation in team meetings
  • Transitions of care including: hospice and DME
  • Educational activities related to emergent needs of patients and their families

Required Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education is necessary.
  • Current clinical license to practice social work in the State of Michigan (LLMSW or LMSW).
  • Clinical practice concentration and field practicum or recent work experience in a hospital required.
  • It is essential that the candidate be able to manage a large caseload with multiple competing demands.
  • The ability to work independently in a variety of stressful and demanding situations is essential; critical decision making, excellent assessments, brief interventions and multi-tasking are only several of the advanced skills required for success.

Desired Qualifications*

The ideal candidate will have significant medical social work experience, strong assessment skills, the ability to establish therapeutic relationships quickly, and to relate well to a diverse population.

The successful candidate must also be able to work with multidisciplinary teams and access community resources in order to facilitate discharge planning. Experience providing crisis intervention and grief counseling is essential, along with brief interventions to facilitate patient and family participation in appropriate health care decision making.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
