The Social Work Associate (SWA) provides pre-abortion decision assessment and counseling, patient advocacy during the abortion, cleaning of equipment and instruments, stocking of supplies, clerical duties, and health education in the recovery room. This position plays an integral role in maintaining clinic and patient flow through clear and direct communication with all team members, accurate and detailed documentation, patient and chart coordination, setting up and breaking down exam rooms, and procuring medical supplies and equipment. The SWA works with physicians, nurses, and medical and nursing students to provide medically excellent, compassionate, and culturally sensitive care. Pre-abortion decision assessment and counseling includes information about the procedure and its risks, aftercare instructions, contraceptive health education, decision assessment, and screening for psychosocial issues. Decision counseling is provided for patients who are experiencing decision conflict and/or ambivalence.
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences (Ob/Gyn & RS) is a major academic Department in the School of Medicine, engaged in clinical, research, and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion and San Francisco General Hospital campuses, as well as satellite locations throughout the Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of $77.2 million and the new Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital at Mission Bay. The OBGYN Department has 102 full-time faculty, 136 other academic appointees, 39 post-doctoral fellows, 20 clinical fellows, 36 residents, 136 voluntary clinical faculty, and 266 staff. • Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field and one year experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Bilingual in English and Cantonese, Mandarin, or Vietnamese
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Compassionate, non-judgmental attitude
• Ability to provide support to patients experiencing complex emotions
• Ability to work with a culturally and socio-economically diverse population
• Ability to work in a medical/surgical environment
• Desire to work in abortion and family planning
