General Notes

The IC² Institute, a “think and do” tank at The University of Texas at Austin, conducts research concerned with understanding the well-being economy, broadly, and the intersection between health disparities and digital health, specifically, with a focus on data-based research.

 

The position works under the supervision of Dr. S. Craig Watkins, Professor and Executive Director at IC2.  Dr. Matt Kammer-Kerwick, Senior Research Scientist at IC2 will also be involved in the projects associated with this position. The initial assignment is for one year from initial hire date and may be renewable based on performance and funding. This position will include a full-time benefits package.

Purpose

To participate in innovative research at the IC² Institute.  

 


Responsibilities
  • Perform research on various topics related to the health disparities, data science, and health-oriented modeling and analysis.

  • Participate/assist in writing of publications in scholarly journals.

  • Present research progress and finding at meetings and conferences.

  • Train and mentor undergraduate research assistants or graduate research assistants.

  • Assist in grant writing.

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team.

Required Qualifications

Minimum educational requirements include a B.A/B.S.  in a related field such as computer science, data science, information science, math, statistics, or quantitative social sciences.  

Experience or interest in publishing research findings.

Research skills and experience:

  • Experience with large-scale datasets, data management and analysis.

  • Demonstrated expertise with quantitative data gathering and analysis.  Areas of interest include:

    • regression analysis

    • structural equation modeling

    • longitudinal analysis

    • geospatial data analysis

    • network analysis

    • AI-Machine Learning oriented tasks such as supervised/unsupervised learning methods

  • Experience programming in R for data analysis

  • Experience programming in Python, Java, C++, SQL, or other language relevant to data analysis

  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and the ability to handle competing deadlines.

  • Project management experience.

  • Willingness to perform a variety of duties and keep track of work for reporting to supervisors on progress.

  • Ability to work optimally and independently in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ideal candidates are driven, self-starters with the ability to grasp complex subject matter quickly and work well within teams.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in research related to data, health, and/or health disparities

  • Experience with agent-based modeling or other simulation methods

  • Experience with ecological momentary assessment methods

  • Experience working on teams with undergraduate and graduate students

  • Experience with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive modeling


Salary Range

$45,000 - $60,000, commensurate with education and experience


Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

  • Prolonged screen time.

  • Use of manual dexterity.


Work Shift

  • Flexible: 40 hours per week is required and most of this time should be during normal business hours (e.g., M-F, 8 am - 5 pm), although number of hours per day and days per week can be negotiated and may change depending on what projects are being pursued. 

  • Hybrid or remote and in-person work arrangement is available.

  • Living in Austin is required.
