Summary of Duties:


Working within the context of an integrated marketing communications plan under the direction of the Director of Marketing & Strategic Communications, the Social Media and Public Relations Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing social media communications, public relations, and community engagement efforts of the WSU Spokane campus. Duties include developing, writing, and editing social media content, news releases, email newsletters, website content, and other materials that advance and support the strategic goals of the WSU Spokane campus and its affiliated units.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Social Media Communication and Strategy: 45%

  • Develop and lead the strategy, planning and execution of the campus’s social media presence to maximize the reach of public relations, research, advancement, and recruitment efforts.
  • Manage and monitor all social media content concerning the Spokane campus, including but not limited to Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc. 
  • Collaborate with the campus communications team and department personnel to develop and produce social media content, including photo, video, graphic, and written elements. 
  • Plan and lead regular meetings with unit and college-level social media managers. Attend WSU system-level social media strategy meetings. 
  • Provide leadership to colleges and departments regarding the use of social media. Provide support to colleges and departments on handling high-level issues on social media platforms.
  • Advise units on social media strategies and tactics to support institutional and department goals and objectives. 
  • Develop reports and other data analyses requested by internal stakeholders and implement strategies for improvement based on results.
  • Develop, lead and create social media advertising campaigns and strategy. 
  • Assure adherence to branding guidelines and university best practices. Monitor social media pages associated with the campus for brand standards. Communicate with colleges and departments if there are branding issues.
  • Research trends, applications, and products to implement campus communications goals and objectives.

Public Relations & Communications: 30%

  • Direct collaboration efforts with stakeholders across the WSU system, the WSU Spokane campus, and its affiliated units to support the development of timely, relevant, and strategic public relations and communications materials.
  • Develop and edit communication for external and internal stakeholders, including, but not limited to, print publications, presentations, internal announcements, blogs, and videos.
  • Manage email communications efforts, including the design, curation, and timely delivery of weekly campus announcements and monthly newsletters. 
  • Develop and edit written content for the WSU Spokane websites and collaborate with the Website Coordinator to make continuous website improvements. 
  • Develop the communication strategy, create, manage and distribute news releases and other press advisories through WSU News and external media organizations. 
  • Monitor, compile, and amplify campus and college-related media mentions.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Photographer to manage the online photography database. Distribute images and video to internal and external content creators as needed.
  • Gather and analyze data to assess the impact of communications efforts. Formulate and execute changes to communications strategies based on findings. 

Community Engagement & Events: 20%

  • Plan, organize and implement campus-led annual and special events and provides additional support for community outreach events. 
  • Enhance and expand outreach efforts and collaborative programs aimed at engaging external stakeholders and the general public.
  • Provide event-focused project management including budget oversight and logistical planning.

Other: 5%

  • Assist with emergency communications — in some cases, during extended hours.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing or other relevant field AND either two (2) years of professional experience in print OR broadcast news media, public relations, marketing including the use of electronic media or two (2) years of other relevant professional experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated professional experience managing content on social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing, editing, and proofreading for a variety of media.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply changing marketing and social media tactics and techniques.
  • Demonstrated understanding of branding.
  • Experience working with marketing professionals, writers, editors, graphic designers, photographers, and/or videographers.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a collaborative environment and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using CMS or email marketing systems.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience using WordPress.
  • Experience with social media advertising campaigns and strategy.
  • Experience working in marketing, social media, public relations, and events in higher education or a similar institutional setting or organization.

Monthly Salary: $4,508.70 - $6,199.47 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
