Description

The Anderson Freeman Center fosters an inclusive environment for students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, low-income students, and first-generation students by providing advocacy, support, and programming. Through an intersectional and social justice framework, the AFC encourages student growth, identity exploration, and achieving a sense of belonging. The use of accessible programs and services ensure the longevity of intercultural support at Middlebury College.

There are five fellow positions: Students of Color, Womxn of Color, LGBTQIA+, First-Generation, and Social Media and Communications. Fellows individually and collectively provide programming for students under their assigned identity focus area to engage students and build community at the center.

Interviews conducted Spring 2024 for work in 24-25 academic year.


Requirements
Essential Functions:

Through programming, AFC Fellows will promote academic excellence and build community for all students from underrepresented populations. AFC Fellows will work closely with Center staff to design and implement programs in the following areas:

  • Academic success
  • Social transition
  • Cultural events
  • Community building
  • Alumni engagement

Additional programs include but are not limited to: The first-gen experience, queer and trans* student support, undocumented student and DREAMer support, and international student support.

Position Specific Duties

Social Media and Comms Fellow will

  • Maintain all AFC social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok), the AFC website,
  • Create the AFC weekly newsletter in Mailchimp and send it out to our listservs
  • Maintain the AFC’s overall listserv of students, faculty, and staff who receive communication from the center by removing and adding people to the subscription list.
  • Actively seek new ways of engaging an audience on AFC social media accounts, including but not limited to takeovers, post series, reels, or other creative ideas.
  • Create ongoing social media campaigns that highlights the AFCs work, programs, staff (professional and student)
  • Work with all other programming fellows to create advertising and media presentations related to their events and programs, ensuring that all documents have been well though through for design, readability, accessibility, accuracy of information, and general attractiveness and creativity.
  • In conjunction with the other fellows and Davis Library professional staff, create the display designs for the library during heritage and history months.
  • Be present at AFC events to assist with logistics, photography, and collect and create content for social media or other outlets.
  • Work in conjunction with the Director of the AFC, Assistant Director of ISSS, and Assistant Director for Student Leadership and Development on creating marketing materials for all leader recruitment.

Administrative Duties

  • Provide front office support and reception coverage for the Center, including greeting and assisting other students and visitors.
  • Provide information about the office and our programs to visitors.
  • Be familiar with AFC details, cultural student organizations, campus events, and student resources and services.
  • Assist with planning, preparation, and execution of Center events. This includes setting up logistical elements of events and providing front-line assistance during the event.
  • Support Center staff and faculty on a wide range of projects including event planning, data input, program research, and logistical support.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Complete space management tasks such as having students sign in, answering questions, ensuring students clean up after themselves, etc.
  • Complete office tasks as necessary: running errands, hanging posters, printing, and copying materials, etc.
  • Attend regular meetings with AFC Staff and Faculty.
  • Work collaboratively with other AFC Fellows and Center Staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Prior experience with photography
  • Advanced social media marketing skills
  • Ability to utilize Adobe design suite, Canva, and/or other online creative software for designing documents and marketing materials.
  • Prior leadership and work experience on campus
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and promoting campus programs and events

Knowledge Desired

  • Basic computer skills, proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Basic office skills – photocopying and filing.
  • Knowledge of Middlebury College resources helpful.
  • Knowledge of other computer programs including, but not limited to, 25Live, MiddLink, Drupal, InDesign, and Photoshop, is helpful.

Other

AFC Fellows are Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors who have demonstrated personal and academic growth over their time at Middlebury College.

Position pays at level C.

Commitment Period

September through mid-May at approximately 10-15 hours per week.

Other Notes

Applicants should be available to work several shifts Monday – Friday between the hours of 10:00a.m. and 9:00p.m., and on weekends to assist with Center coverage.


Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.


Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
