Social Justice Research Scholar
About the Opportunity
About this opportunity
The Social Justice Peer Mentorship Program, funded through the University's Inclusive Impact Innovation Fund (I3). This program is intended to enable faculty and alumni to collaboratively mentor undergraduate students in leading social justice initiatives and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the sciences. Faculty and social justice leaders have been developing this approach for several years, during which time it helped operationalize initiatives in STEM led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students. The goal of this program is to support diverse student populations by providing both faculty and alumni mentorship, forge meaningful connections, and improve the communities we are a part of. Peers involved in the program ensures the focus to use a student-centered approach and to create trusting relationships amongst their peers as students navigate personal and academic transitions.
Responsibilities
The Social Justice Research Scholar (SJRS) can actively participate in each of the following roles and work collaboratively with a faculty mentor to support undergraduate students in leading social justice initiatives in the sciences:

  • Mentor - The SJRS can complete approximately 20-30 hours per semester of peer-to-peer mentorship with an undergraduate student to support the student through their personal growth and development of a social justice initiative. Approximately an additional 10-20 hours can be used to complete SJRS related work from their previously tested student-led social justice research project.
  • Content Expert - The SJRS can complete approximately 2-3 consulting sessions (3-5 hours per session) per semester about a specific content expertise based on their previous experiences and skills leading and conducting social justice research projects. These consulting sessions must align with the undergraduate students' interest and inform the student's knowledge and skills to develop and mobilize their social justice initiative.
  • Outreach Consultant - The SJRS can complete approximately 1-2 consulting sessions (3-5 hours per session) per semester to assist with program recruitment and development through special projects, such as creation of recruitment videos and flyers to promote student interest in the mentorship program.

These roles will allow undergraduate students to be supported by a diverse group of scholars and provide an array of experiential learning opportunities including: shadowing direct research projects with community stakeholders, receiving collaborative mentorship from near peers and faculty, learning about different social justice topics, understanding research and IRB human subjects' protocols and procedures, supporting research activities related to data collection and management, assisting the development of new student-led initiatives and research, and providing a chance to co-author potential published material, such as a conference abstract.
