Position Summary
The Tick-Borne Disease Study Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the daily operations of two studies focused on Tick-Borne Diseases in North Carolina (TBD-NC). These are CDC/NCDHHS-funded projects that aim to define the clinical epidemiology and spatial risk of tick-borne diseases such as Spotted Fever group rickettsioses and ehrlichiosis in central North Carolina. This position will collaborate on the development and maintenance of study protocols, data collection tools, lab manuals, case reports, and databases. The Tick-Borne Disease Study Coordinator will be a member of our Vector-borne Disease Epidemiology, Ecology, and Response (VEER) Hub Research team, and will work with graduate students, medical students, laboratory technicians and assistants, and more team members to support various projects.
Key activities for this position include:
1) Coordinate screening and enrollment of participants
2) Serve as liaison between the study team, research participants, collaborators, and testing laboratories
3) Confirm participant appointments and ensure clinics are properly staffed
4) Schedule meetings among internal and external collaborators
5) Ensure study protocols are followed and updated as needed
6) Oversee data security and management in electronic database (REDCap)
7) Perform quality checks to ensure completeness and consistency of hardcopy data and data entered electronically
8) Manage inventory and order additional supplies as needed
9) Monitor daily the availability of biological specimens at UNC Hospital laboratories
10) Ensure proper collection, labeling, processing, and storage of biology specimens
11) Prepare regular status reports
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Working knowledge of common software Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Exceptional communication skills (both oral and written) and professional demeanor
  • Comfort and skill at communicating with people from diverse backgrounds, including study staff, investigators, participants, study sponsors or their designees
  • Demonstrated experience with multitasking, attention to detail, meticulous record-keeping, and reorganizing tasks according to shifting priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Master’s degree in public health, biological sciences, or related field.
  • Experience working in clinical research environment
  • Experience working in a hospital/clinic setting
  • Experience developing research reports for study team members and study populations, preferably via REDCap
  • Experience entering research information into a variety of databases and performing quality control of research records across databases (REDCap)
  • Experience with EPIC or other Electronic Health Record system
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Be able to walk or transport oneself via walking paths approximately 1 mile round-trip to collect biological specimens with or without accommodation.
