Department Description

The North Carolina Children’s Hospital is part of a quaternary care medical center with a 58 bed multidisciplinary Neonatal Critical Care Center (NCCC) that admits over 900 patients per year and supports active pediatric general surgery, pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, newborn airway programs, as well as being the referral center for central and eastern North Carolina. The Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine currently consists of 13 faculty members and 7 fellows who are part of a fully accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program. NIH-funded research projects include the ELGAN-ECHO Study and participation in the NICHD Global Health Network, the Neonatal Research Network, and the Pediatric Trials Network.

Position Description

This position will serve as a Social/Clinical Research Assistant within the SOM, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. This position will perform a variety of research, data, IRB and clerical duties to support the conduct of clinical research. This position will participate in day-to-day operations related to the collection, compilation, and documentation of clinical research data. This position will act as primary contact with federal regulatory authorities for clinical trials and liaison between regulatory authorities and faculty. The responsibilities for this position include study coordination, data collection and entry, research management, submitting IRB applications and modifications, communicating with multiple internal and external personnel and offices, and upholding all policy and guideline requirements for social/clinical research projects.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

- Must have strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to interact with clinical investigators, laboratory personnel, study sponsors, IRB, Office of Clinical Trials, and support staff.
- Must have working knowledge of medical terminology, techniques and methodologies used in developing, coordinating and managing clinical research projects.
- Must have ability to rapidly adjust priorities, work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision, and work under deadline pressure.
- Must be highly analytical and able to solve highly complex problems with relevant research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Direct and diverse experience working with or for a Health Affairs Institutional Review Board(s) at a large university. 3-5 years of clinical research experience. Comprehensive knowledge of US state and federal laws, international directives, statues and regulations. Spanish speaking is a plus.
