Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the UNC Kidney Center (UNCKC) and the UNC Division of Nephrology & Hypertension is to reduce the burden of chronic kidney disease through discovery about the pathophysiology and therapeutics of kidney disease and through the development and assessment of educational programs about kidney disease for North Carolinians and their primary care physicians. The UNCKC’s Kidney Education Outreach Program (KEOP) promotes citizens’ increased awareness of personal risk factors for kidney disease and increased knowledge about how the kidneys function. Four research laboratories are funded through a variety of external sources, including NIH Program Project (PO1), T32, U01 and K23 awards. Epidemiologic and clinical research in such areas as focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (FSGS), ADPKD, ANCA and Lupus vasculitis, Literacy and health outcomes is funded through NIH, foundations, private donors and corporate grants.
Position Summary
The purpose of this position is the daily management of research projects and related activities at UNC Kidney Center.
Work is performed independently, in close coordination with physicians, PhDs, and other coordinators associated with the UNC Kidney Center.
Protocols conducted in the UNC Kidney Center are reviewed by the UNC School of Medicine’s Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Human Subjects, and may involve the use of children, adults, or both as study subjects. They include federally-funded and industry-sponsored studies. 
Patient participation may be limited to Outpatient visits or may require a combination of Inpatient and Outpatient study visits, most of which are done , in the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) or the Ambulatory Care Center at UNC Hospitals. Travel to offsite UNC outpatient clinics and dialysis units is required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The person in this position will be scheduling a large number of participants into several research projects so good organizational skills and attention to detail are a must. The ability to connect with research participants and discuss research projects in an understandable way is critical to the success of the projects this person will be assisting with. The person should have good communication skills both oral and written and the capacity to adjust in a team and be flexible. This person should be comfortable in a hospital and outpatient clinic setting.
This person will be required to travel to satellite clinics.
Should be competent with Microsoft Access databases and Microsoft Office and have experience with web-based data entry systems, spreadsheet preparation, data collection/management/analysis.
This person needs to have basic laboratory bench training for sample processing (including RNA extraction and DNA isolation) and storage.
This person needs prior knowledge of the Institutional Review Board Process as they will be required to prepare materials for submission.
This employee will interact with many other members of the Division including study investigators, clinicians, administrators, research coordinators and laboratory personnel including post-doctoral fellows and students. This person will work as a team member including taking direction from others, and self-initiating and managing projects as deemed necessary.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer candidate with Bachelors and/or Master’s Degree in Public Health, Science or related field; at least 2 years prior experience in a research setting.
