Department Description
The mission of the Department of Pediatrics is 1) to provide state of the art critical care, chronic care, and acute care of children with a full spectrum of pediatric disorders 2) to teach Medical Students, Residents and Fellows to excel in the field of pediatric medicine and to 3) conduct highly meritorious clinical and/or laboratory based investigation in each division or program.  The Department’s organizational component consists of 14 divisions, various off campus sites and additional cost centers.
 
The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine serves the children of North Carolina in high quality and comprehensive patient-centered care.  The division is focused on innovative teaching and groundbreaking research that impacts practice and policy.  Division members have been awarded prestigious research grants and are active participants and mentors to those who participate in several distinguished conferences.
 
Dr. Flower’s work focuses on improving care for underserved populations, and reducing language-related disparities in health and health care for children.  She has led national multisite collaboratives to improve infant feeding, and currently leads an American Academy of Pediatrics collaborative of primary care practices improving screening in early childhood.  Dr. Flower will serve as lead for the study at UNC for which this position is 100% funded.  She will oversee the implementation of the study at UNC, including training of pediatric residents and attending physicians, identification, recruitment, and consent of patients; intervention implementation, data collection, and stakeholder engagement, including of families and resident physicians.

Position Description
This position directly supports the research endeavors of Kori Flower, MD and will perform clinical research involving recruitment, enrollment, data collection (structured phone interviews, structured in person interviews) from Spanish-speaking and English-speaking subjects, and coordination of study visits; assist in overseeing and coordinating study intervention (obesity prevention intervention); participate in research meetings to gain a better understanding of protocol issues and project developments; assist in preparation of all study documents including data collection documents, IRB documents, manuscripts and presentations. 
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The position requires an employee who is and has:
  • A fluent Spanish speaker.
  • Able to document the ability to perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Skillful at interacting with diverse populations, including Spanish-speaking and English-speaking parents and young children. 
Preferred Qualifications
We prefer candidates have knowledge of:
  • American Academy of Pediatrics The Injury Prevention Program (TIPP) protocol and handouts.
  • The IRB submission process. 
  • At least one year of experience with clinical trial, patient recruitment and retention

 
We prefer candidate’s educational background include:
  • Completion of a four-year college degree in sociology, psychology, or related social science.
  • Coursework in statistics and qualitative research methodology

 
Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • Experience working in the Latino community and awareness of Hispanic culture.
  • Clinical experience working with physicians and families of a variety of backgrounds.
  • Able to document the ability to establish rapport quickly with research subjects, including parents and young children.
