Position Summary | We are seeking applicants for an exciting opportunity as a Soc/Clin Research Assistant. This position is located within the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, with cross-collaboration in units including Epidemiology, the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), the Carolina Thyroid Cancer Study (CTCS), as well as the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB). The OEEB investigates workplace and environmental conditions that may pose a risk to human health. This position will also collaborate with the NCDHHS Central Cancer Registry (CCR). Working in conjunction with the NCDHHS Division of Public Health, we provide evidence to support public health decisions and policy efforts across North Carolina. We also promote a people-focused, team-oriented, transparent, and joyful workplace. The Soc/Clin Research Assistant will support NCDHHS involvement in the Carolina Thyroid Cancer Study (CTCS). CTCS will investigate potential causes of elevated rates of thyroid cancer in Iredell County and across North Carolina, including environmental factors. CTCS will be conducted by researchers at University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University, working with NCDHHS. CTCS will include a series of statewide geospatial analyses to examine the geographic and temporal co-occurrence of thyroid cancer in relation to sources and patterns of specific environmental and other factors. Primary duties include assistance with evaluating and transferring NC environmental databases to CTCS, conducting data management and preliminary analysis, maintaining the inclusion of cancer data on the NCDHHS Environmental Health Data Dashboard, and helping to serve as a liaison to the CTCS study. Depending on interest and skill level, the position may also assist with geospatial mapping, analysis, and data visualization. This position is remote, and hours are flexible in coordination with the program supervisor and team. This would be a great opportunity for a recent graduate or current master’s student to supplement ongoing coursework in epidemiology, environmental sciences, or public health/other science-related background. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | The ideal candidate would be data savvy, detail oriented, and have intermediate SAS and basic ArcGIS skills. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Familiarity with R, Tableau, and Redcap is helpful. |
