Position Summary | The principal purpose of the Social/Clinical Research Assistant will be to support ongoing clinical and research efforts underway in the research program directed by Dr. Jonathan Berg and Dr. Laura Milko. This position will work as a coordinator for various working groups within the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) and the Age-Based Genomic Screening (ABGS) projects. Duties will include scheduling meetings, drafting email correspondence, organizing and maintaining an accurate record of research activities, tracking action items, drafting/editing research protocols and presentations. Coordination support will entail assisting with working groups by scheduling calls, taking notes, planning agendas, developing PowerPoint presentations and excel spreadsheets, recording calls, and communicating with team members and leaders. Additionally, the research assistant will be trained to manage the ABGS website for periodic updates and expected to export/manage data received from Qualtrics during ongoing projects. The position is also responsible for the facilitation of community outreach for ABGS. In this outreach, one responsibility is to maintain positive relationships with our Community Research Board and other community partner organizations by acting as a liaison between these groups and the UNC ABGS Team. Another major component of this outreach is the organization and communication with external community partners to outreach events about genetics. Before these events, this research assistant will aid in tracking inventory, creating new outreach items (e.g. flyers, booklets, banners, etc.), coordinating ABGS members for the event, and writing/communicating event details for members. In the instance that active recruitment for research is occurring at these events, the assistant will aid in sending rewards to participants and tracking these payments via TANGO (will be trained during onboarding). Attendance at outreach events, typically held 1-2 times a month and often on weekend days, is generally required and included in the 40-hour work week. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Confidence in scientific/health communication is needed to conduct community outreach in diverse populations as a part of this role. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | At least one year of relevant research experience. Qualitative research experience or interest in this work is a plus. Ideal candidates will have a BS in a science field related to genetics and will possess the ability to work well independently under supervision. Ideal candidate should have a basic understanding of genetics and should have superior organizational and time management skills and the ability to work effectively with MS Office Suite and other common software such as Adobe Acrobat. Previous experience working with Qualtrics and Wordpress is a plus. A keen interest in working toward improving patient care and public health is a plus. Multilingual proficiency in Spanish or other languages is also a plus. |
