The Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Orange County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP-Ed) Nutritionist will primarily be responsible for direction, organization, coordination, and management of established SNAP-Ed public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout the Hudson Valley SNAP-Ed Region. This position will also assist with marketing efforts for SNAP-Ed programming in collaboration with other nutritionists in the SNAP-Ed region. Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.
This is a 1.0 FTE grant-funded full time, exempt, benefits eligible position. This position will be an employee of CCE Orange County and will provide SNAP-Ed educational programs in Orange County, and as needed throughout the region. Ability to speak, write, and communicate in Spanish is required. This position will also support efforts for policy systems and environmental community change around food and movement in Orange County and throughout the region. Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program is through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).
This position receives supervision, programmatic leadership and coordination by the SNAP-Ed Project Manager based in Orange County, and required a degree in Nutrition, Health Education, and/or Public Health, and an ability to communicate in Spanish both verbally and in writing

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with course work in Nutrition, Public Health, or Health Education or related field.
  • Minimum one year of relevant work experience.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Ability to speak, write, and communicate in Spanish required. 
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable motor vehicle/driving record requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to analyze issues and to initiate, plan, organize, implement & evaluate informal educational programs addressing diverse audiences in assigned areas.
  • Ability to utilize computer technology to author reports and proposals, communicate internally and externally, prepare visuals, access information, to learn and teach.
  • Ability to follow curriculum & recipes and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.
  • Ability to transport supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.
  • Experience with SNAP-Ed or other public health initiatives

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Development – 5%

  • Apply subject matter knowledge to enhance the development of educational strategies for assigned programs within SNAP-Ed programming activities where applicable. 
  • Influence the creation of innovative program materials to address the needs of the participants in the above-mentioned SNAP-Ed programs.
  • May support the research, identification, and selection of resources for the program. 

Program Delivery – 25%

  • Implement innovative SNAP-Ed educational programming activities in support of other nutrition programming efforts as identified/needed to support the established plan of work.
  • Lead in multi-association team efforts through joint planning and implementation of multi-disciplinary programs and innovative program activities to deliver the SNAP-Ed Program.
  • Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, apply already established curriculum and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.
  • Effectively utilize all forms of mass media, including social media, for delivery of SNAP-Ed educational programs – variety of delivery methods – including virtual/digital education through various platforms, such as Zoom, YouTube, Facebook, and others.
  • Provide high quality programming, both virtual and in person, utilizing established subject matter to individuals and groups utilizing SNAP-Ed program materials and resources.
  • Work to foster acceptance of the SNAP-Ed Program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences. 
  • Serve as a subject-matter resource in the area of Nutrition to staff and participants, community organizations, and the general public. 

Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.
  • Interact with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county, and community leaders to obtain evaluation data for programs.
  • Assist in the process of analyzing collected program data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.
  • Assist with making recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.
  • Communicate evaluation results and findings to constituents as appropriate.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction – 25%

  • Plan the delivery of educational programs based on program evaluation data and changing local priorities. In collaboration with supervisor, establish program goals and priorities, including input from the community on program needs focusing on nutrition.
  • In collaboration with supervisor, develop marketing strategics, public affairs, and special events to reach target audiences and meet program objectives.
  • Provide supervisor with program related information for the budget development process.
  • Strategize ways to expand effective SNAP-Ed Program networks.
  • Provide input into the planning of all programs to consider the needs of diverse program participants. 
  • Provide input for the development of written marketing materials to highlight a program/s.

Management – 30%

  • Demonstrate judgement and discretion to independently solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the SNAP-Ed Program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures, as needed.
  • Guide the coordination of data management systems to accurately reflect SNAP-Ed members and program activities. 
  • Lead the management of volunteers, including recruitment and involvement, training and tracking volunteer contribution, ensuring the program adheres to Volunteer Involvement Policy (VIP).
  • Responsible for maintaining and managing program budget in collaboration with Supervisor.
  • Guide the implementation of program budget including assistance to identify community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.
  • Manage the implementation of communications strategics to expand program and build awareness.
  • Provide moderately complex administrative management of established educational program goals, e.g., manage the recruitment, coordination, and teaching of qualified participants; manage tools and teaching supplies needed to deliver a successful program. 
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts. 

Coordination/Operation – 5%

  • Organize and coordinate SNAP-Ed in person and virtual program activities (i.e., food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.
  • Coordinate identified administrative aspects of the SNAP-Ed Program including, but not limited to preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.
  • Maintain records, complete reports, accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.
  • Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.
  • Assist in providing existing program information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, and news releases, etc. Maintain extreme confidentiality of participant information and data collected.
  • Submit program expense and mileage reports in a timely manner.
  • This position may require the transport of program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
