This position will serve as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-ED) Nutritionist for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Onondaga County. The SNAP-ED Nutritionist will primarily be responsible for the delivery of established SNAP-ED public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing targeted age groups throughout Onondaga County. The SNAP-ED Nutritionist will provide non-formal education using approved curricula and lesson plans to participants through direct and indirect education efforts with a focus on general nutrition, food preparation, food choice, food safety and physical activity. Nutrition education will be conducted in a variety of community settings to include, but not limited to: emergency food program sites, schools, parks, youth serving organizations, Farmer’ Markets and school/community gardens. This position will collect and track data using approved protocol following Association and University confidentiality protocol.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time non-exempt position, 37.5 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $20.00. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, and retirement.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in the field of Nutrition, Health Education or Public Health or Registered Dietician.
  • Experience providing nutrition education to low-income and minority and/or bilingual individuals.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written communications.
  • Ability to facilitate effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences in various-sized group settings.
  • Ability to work and communicate remotely (including but not limited to: phone, email, and video conferencing), if deemed necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in adult and/or youth education or other relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place.
  • Experience working with the limited resources, culturally-diverse populations.
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities development with immediate supervisor.
  • Ability to community effectively both verbally and in basic writing with Spanish-language speaking audiences.
  • Proficient with basic Microsoft applications, internet navigation and current social media applications (e.g. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).

Program Responsibilities :

Program Delivery - 75%

  • Deliver high quality programming to individuals and groups utilizing approved SNAP-ED curricula and existing SNAP-ED program materials and resources.
  • Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, adapt lesson plans and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.
  • Assist with implementing environmental program initiatives, such as community and school gardens.
  • Assist in multi-association team efforts to deliver the SNAP-ED Program.
  • Utilize existing program materials and educational framework, teach, and graduate the targeted number of adult and youth participants in the Nutrition Program.
  • Conduct food demonstrations and samplings for targeted audiences following established protocol using safe food handling procedures.
  • Inform participants of other Extension programs, community agencies and services.
  • Implement lesson plans in region with multicultural needs using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials, and tailor appropriate programming based on identified participant needs as applicable.
  • Under the direction of the Supervisor collaborate with community agencies and participate in discussions surrounding program delivery and community connections with community agencies that serve the program audience.
  • Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

Program Evaluation - 5%

  • Assist in the interaction with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county and community leaders to obtain evaluation data for programs.
  • Assist in communication of evaluation results and findings.
  • Make recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.

Administrative Responsibilities :

 

Coordination/Operation - 15%

  • Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP-ED Program.
  • Organize and coordinate SNAP-ED program activities (i.e. food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.
  • Track and submit expenses monthly based on Association policy and program guidelines.
  • Assist Educator Team with determining food and supplies needed for recipe preparation.
  • Maintain accurate records of class participants using appropriate forms.
  • Complete reports accurately, as requested and/or required.
  • Collect and prepare paperwork as required by the program evaluation process.
  • Perform routine data collection and entry into the software system utilizing by the program.
  • Maintain and follow all confidentiality protocols regarding all program participants as established by the Association.
  • Assist in providing marketing materials in the promotion of SNAP-ED programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutrition educators.
  • Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.
  • Carry out assignments and as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to assisting with local health fairs, community activities, etc.
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
  • This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
