Job Description
 

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri currently seeks candidates for a full-time non-tenure track faculty position in Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation as either a Clinical Instructor, Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor.  The incumbent will join a new and expanding Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service aimed at being Missouri’s premier performance and rehabilitation center for companion and working animals.  Utilizing a team-based approach, the section offers leading-edge care to optimize recovery, performance of daily life and sport activities, and quality of life for our patients. The section specializes in advanced techniques, including extensive imaging diagnostics, therapeutic modalities such as underwater and dry land treadmills, therapeutic ultrasound and laser, dry needle acupuncture and manual therapy, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, joint and soft tissue injection therapies, mobility aids, and therapeutic exercises.  The sections provides services including:

  • Lameness evaluation, diagnostics, and non-surgical therapies
  • Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation for orthopedic and neurologic conditions
  • Limb difference (congenital or acquired through amputation) rehabilitation
  • Weight management
  • Arthritis and pain management
  • Athletic/working/service dog performance evaluation and conditioning programs
  • Quality of life enhancement for pets affected by chronic disease
  • Therapeutic exercise programs

The service was launched in September of 2022 and has seen significant and rapid caseload growth and service demand.  Initial funding for the growth of section has been provided through $1.3 million in external funding from Purina.  Additionally, the section recently completed work on the new Wallenberg Small Animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Suite and a ribbon cutting was hosted in July of 2023.

This is a full-time, benefit eligible, 12-month renewable appointment as a non-tenure track faculty member.  This appointment’s primary focus will be teaching and clinical within our Veterinary Health Center (VHC).  Non-tenure track candidates are expected to participate in collaborative scholarly endeavors within the College. As part of this appointment, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide clinical instruction of students (professional), interns, and residents in sports medicine and rehabilitation.
  • Contribute to the professional and graduate curriculum by participating in classroom and laboratory instruction. Opportunities for online instruction are possible.
  • Represent the University, College, and VHC through outreach activities for animal-owning public, referring veterinarians, or other relevant stakeholders.
  • Participate in the discovery process by participating in clinical, resident or house officer research related to sports medicine and rehabilitation.
  • Participate in faculty governance activities.

MU’s Veterinary Health Center (VHC) is a state-of-the-art teaching and medical services facility for companion animals as well as livestock.  The VHC has 51,211 square feet dedicated to the small animal hospital, including separate areas for our 14 specialty service lines, a full-service clinical pathology laboratory, an in-house pharmacy, as well as radiation therapy and imaging.  The VHC additionally provides a supportive environment for clinical trial research and has experience in performing veterinary clinical trials.


Qualifications
 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (such as VMD, BVSc)
  • Diplomate status or eligibility for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) or successful completion of a residency that qualifies for certification by the American College of Veterinary Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine prior to appointment start date. Certification through a physical rehabilitation training program will also be considered.

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Eligibility for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Missouri.
  • Professional, residency and graduate training.
  • Educational and professional achievement, career goals and the needs of the college.
  • Communication skills, experience working effectively in diverse environments and letters of reference will also be considered in selection of a successful candidate.
