The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest-rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board-certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state-of-the-art specialty healthcare, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from the College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties
  • Provide technical support for the Small Animal Primary Care Service.
  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary students with examinations, treatments, animal handling, restraint, surgery circulation, and anesthesia.
  • Responsible for breaking down various technical tasks into steps and effectively articulating to students how to perform these tasks (anesthesia, dentistry, venipuncture, recovery from sedation and or anesthesia, etc.).
  • Responsible for identifying areas where students will need additional help/improvement.
  • Administer treatments, perform lab tests, and maintain medical records.
  • Monitor patients while under anesthesia for surgery and dentistry.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment, including repair schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with all Infectious disease protocols.
  • Perform administrative role for service; inventory control, correct billing, scheduling, supply ordering/purchasing, monitoring treatment sheets for accuracy, and ensuring good communication and collaboration with all ancillary services and other areas of the hospital.
  • Organize, set up, and breakdown procedural laboratories for student teaching; to include but not limited to set up of equipment, lab materials, and cadavers.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments.
  • Conducts responsibilities with a focus on Fear Free and Feline-Friendly Practices.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Previous experience as a Registered Veterinary technician in a canine/feline veterinary setting.
  • Ability to assess settings regarding safety, best practices, and sterile techniques.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism and patience in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accomodations
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high-quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach 2nd, 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
  • Willingness to help in other areas of the hospital as needed when asked by the supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of NC.
  • Experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
  • Experience administering and monitoring anesthesia.
  • Experience in Dentistry.
  • Experience with Exotic Animals is a plus.
