Job Description
 

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri currently seeks candidates for an open faculty position in Small Animal Cardiology at either the clinical instructor, assistant / associate / full teaching professor (NTT), or assistant / associate / full professor (TT) rank.  The incumbent will join a thriving Cardiology Service comprised of board-certified cardiologists, residents, specialty intern, a dedicated cardiology registered veterinary technician, and a cardiology veterinary assistant.  The team has a dedicated workstation spaces for both clinicians and technical staff, two treatment/echocardiography rooms, and a state-of-the-art interventional procedures suite. The Cardiology Service has a robust outpatient service with a busy interventional caseload (typically one day per week is dedicated to procedures, with additional emergency procedures accommodated as needed).

The team works closely with nearly every service in the hospital, providing same-day consultations to improve patient care and client satisfaction. Resources available to support the clinical and research aspects of the service include three digital echocardiographic systems (Vivid E90, Vivid E9, and Vivid iq), transesophageal echocardiography (adult and pediatric probes), three integrated GE echocardiographic workstations (EchoPacs), a fluoroscopy suite with C-arm for interventional procedures, cardiac pacing (St. Jude/Abbott, Medtronic, and Dextronic interrogation units, temporary pacing systems, Lifepak 20e for transthoracic pacing), analog and digital (Beecardia) ECG systems; Holter monitoring (through Alba Medical), and digital medical records (VetView) as well as digital inpatient monitoring (Instinct). Other hospital resources include digital radiography, ultrasonography, video endoscopy, onsite 640-slice CT with cardiac-gating and PET-CT capabilities, 3T MRI, linear accelerator, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine. Clinical pathology and gross pathology services are also available on site. 

This is a full-time, benefit eligible, 12 month/year appointment. Teaching or tenure track options are available depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate.  Distribution of effort between teaching, research, and service will depend upon whether a tenure track or teaching track option is chosen as well as the successful candidate’s qualifications, career goals, and the needs of the cardiology section.  Duties will also include:

  • Providing clinical instruction of students (professional), interns, and residents in veterinary cardiology, utilizing the caseload of the VHC.
  • Contributing to the professional and graduate curriculum by participating in classroom and laboratory instruction. Opportunities for online instruction are possible.
  • Representing the University, College, and VHC through outreach activities for animal-owning public, referring veterinarians, or other relevant stakeholders.
  • Providing consultation to off-site, university-operated clinics.
  • Participation with other faculty and house officers in after-hours call.
  • Participation in the discovery process by participating in collaborative research and graduate/house officer research.
  • Participation in faculty governance activities.

MU’s Veterinary Health Center (VHC) is a state-of-the-art teaching and medical services facility for companion animals as well as livestock.  The VHC has 51,211 square feet dedicated to the small animal hospital, including separate areas for our 14 specialty service lines, a full-service clinical pathology laboratory, an in-house pharmacy, as well as radiation therapy and imaging.  The VHC additionally provides a supportive environment for clinical trial research and has experience in performing veterinary clinical trials.


Qualifications
 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (such as VMD, BVSc)
  • Diplomate status or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) or completion of an approved cardiology residency training by appointment start date.

  • Educational and professional achievement, career goals and the needs of the college.
  • Communication skills, experience working effectively in diverse environments and letters of reference will also be considered in selection of a successful candidate.
  • We are seeking a candidate with interest in practicing leading-edge medicine/surgery, who has a passion for teaching, and who may have potential to participate in multidisciplinary research and establish a sustainable research program.
