Department Description

One of two foremen in the Plumbing Shop. This position supervises Construction projects and Fire Protection; the other supervises daily maintenance activities.



Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Senior Superintendent, provide leadership to multi-trade staff for plumbing construction projects. Supervise the general direction for specific project or on a regular assigned basis. Provide expert technical plumbing support. Manage fire prevention sprinkler systems in university buildings in accordance with Title 19. Conduct fire safety sprinkler prevention activities. Supervise the inspections and corrections for fire sprinklers, connections, heads, valves, pressure readings and other inspection activities. Supervise plumbers in corrections associated with inspections, record keeping, auditing, following repairs through to completion and preparing summary updates to senior management. Service and repair a variety of campus fire protection systems, water, gas, storm drains, sewer collection, de-ionized water, compressed air, acid waste, vacuum and distilled water systems and components. Install new and/or replace systems, either inside or outside buildings. Evaluate and conduct performance reviews for employees and address performance issues.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Climb ladders, on top of machinery and equipment, crawl, stoop, bend and work in confined spaces such as attics and sewer manholes. Lift and maneuver up to 50lbs; items such as large pipe wrenches, sewer cable, sewer cleaning equipment, large pipes, pumps, toilets and sinks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
  • This is an exempt position. The workweek for a full-time exempt employee is normally considered to be 40 hours; however, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to the position than on working a specified number of hours. Exempt employees do not receive overtime compensation or compensatory time off, or additional compensation beyond the established salary for the position.
  • May work a non-standard work schedule that includes nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10.
  • Vacation usage by the employee restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus.
  • Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB’s radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous. Requires use of respirator and protective clothing.
  • Supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Required to participate in an ‘on call’ program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. The on call program requires employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours.
  • Possess or obtain a C-16 license within 6 months from date of hire. This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services at no charge to the applicant. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

  • Possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level crafts person in Plumbing. Non-certified applicants will have their training and experience evaluated by a Credentials Committee of Facilities Services Senior Superintendents and Senior Engineers to determine journey level status.

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Journey level knowledge and experience in the Plumbing trade and related practices.
  • Experience in supervision and leadership with skills to train, manage, evaluate and coach personnel. Experience with assigning work, establishing daily job schedules and reviewing work performed at various stages of completion.
  • Experience with approved trade-related safety devices and practices.
  • Experience with the operation of all equipment used in the trade.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Organizational skills to manage work assignments; plan, track, manage projects and schedules.
  • Customer service and communication skills to provide courteous service in person, on the telephone, and in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Analytical skill to understand and interpret technical data and mechanical and structural specifications and blueprints.
  • Computer skills to manage work assignments; plan, track, manage costs and schedules.
  • Skill to read and interpret construction plans and specifications, shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, safety equipment and instrumentation.
  • Skills to estimate project costs, track costs, compute numerically project/account expenditure/completion rates and perform routine cost analysis. Ability to generate cost control information.
  • Knowledge of University, campus and department policies, procedures and standard practices.
  • Knowledge and skill in the application of applicable codes and regulations including national, state and local plumbing and steam fitting codes, water and waste water regulations, and Cal-OSHA.
  • Skill to inspect or cause others to adequately inspect or perform quality control observation/analysis for projects in progress and upon completion.
  • Knowledge of departmental budgetary process.
