Simulation Technician - Immersive Learning Center - Operations

Position Summary

A position is available in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University for a professional, full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer to assist in the instruction of General Chemistry courses and to play an integral role in curriculum development. This position has an initial commitment of two academic years, pending adequate performance in the first year.

The primary expectation for this position is to work as part of a collaborative on the General Chemistry Team to develop and teach the course materials, including syllabi, lecture notes, course-content videos, recitation materials, Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) problem sets, Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry (POGIL), worksheets, exams, and quizzes. The Lecturer will be fully engaged in the continued development, delivery, and smooth operation of the General Chemistry lecture courses. Growth opportunities are also available, including the applicant teaching a main lecture section.

We offer a three-pronged supplemental program to our students:

• In the General Chemistry Peer-Led Team-Learning (PLTL) program, upper-level undergraduates facilitate weekly study groups of six to eight course registrants who perform group exercises and problem solving as part of the learning experience. The size of this program is significant – approximately 80% of the students enrolled in the General Chemistry courses participate, and there are 80 - 90 PLTL leaders each semester.
• In the Residential Peer Mentoring (RPM) Program, the peer mentors hold walk-in hours in the residential halls and are available to assist students in chemistry. The Chemistry Department provides training to the RPMs and suggests discussion topics and practice problems.
• In the General Chemistry Transition Program, invited students participate in extended recitation sections and weekly academic mentoring sessions. The academic mentoring includes group work, homework exercises, remedial instruction, study-skill training, and academic advising.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Teach in recitation classes, hold regular office hours and help sessions, manage and train graduate teaching assistants.
• Perform course administrative duties, such as grading, overseeing weekly content, and composing quizzes, problem sets, and test questions.
• Promote the Chemistry Department’s efforts in providing resources to enhance the education of undergraduates in the General Chemistry course sequences.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. or E.D. in chemistry and postdoctoral experience in instruction or research.
• Past record of accomplishment in teaching as an instructor of chemistry lecture courses at the college level.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
