Job Summary:

The Simulation Lab Student Assistant (Sim LSA) reports to the Faculty Director of Immersive Learning (ADIL) and serves to set up, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and in some cases repair simulation equipment, hospital-type equipment used in simulation activities, and AV/IT equipment used in simulation activities. ​The Sim LSA orients and assists FDIL, faculty and learners in the use of technical equipment used in simulation. ​In addition, assists in operational activities such as equipment maintenance, scheduling, and inventory functions. The Sim LSA is familiar with the various modalities of simulation education and has a good grasp of simulation educational principles; thus is able to assist in the setup, delivery, and takedown of simulation education sessions.​ ​This position WILL BE REQUIRED to work on-ground as determined by the Dean of School of Nursing and Health Professions. On the job training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assists instructors in selecting appropriate modality of simulation to meet learning objectives and which is appropriate to selected learners – manikin, part task trainer, Standardized Patient (SP). 

  • Assists instructors during the design and running of simulation scenarios. 

  • Setting up and breaking down simulation lab equipment for student and faculty use;

  • Assist with the physical and digital files/maintenance within the Simulation Lab for future recall and accreditation.

  • Ensuring that the skills lab and simulation labs are well‐organized, clean and orderly at all times;

  • Assist the FDIL with management of supply inventory, restocking supplies to support simulation and skills lab activities;

  • Assist the FDIL with equipment maintenance: cleaning and quality assurance checks;

  • Assist with facilitation of nursing skills lab practice and simulation logistics such as having weekly schedules available, that include printed and electronic, student lab schedules and lab team meetings; 

  • Serve as simulator operator running pre‐programmed scenarios with faculty instructors, assuring all equipment is set up for course programs;

  • Support / assist in role playing applications, props placement and moulage set‐up;

  • Assist with technical assistance support and training to faculty, instructors and staff in use of simulation equipment, as necessary;

  • Assist with maintaining records of repairs, spreadsheets, databases, and all other laboratory documentation;

  • Participate in technical training, as necessary;

  • Performs additional duties, as assigned.

Script or scenario 

  • Involved with scenario planning and design and can give advice on the integrity of the scenario by contributing to simulation testing. 

  • Assists with the running of scenarios including direction and coordination of scenarios. 

  • Involved with the educational aspects of Simulation scenarios including debriefing/feedback. 

  • Instructs actors or acts during scenarios; acts as voice of manikin during scenarios.

  • In view of the evolving needs and opportunities, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary. 

Minimum Requirements:

Must possess and demonstrate knowledge in Nursing, Computer Technology or a Health‐related field. Must also possess and demonstrate the following:

  • Proficiency in MS software applications including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Internet and database applications;

  • Ability to work with faculty and students to handle administrative responsibilities related to the position.
