The Office for Disability Equity invites applications for a Sign Language Interpreter/ Transliterator who owns the skills to facilitate communication using American Sign Language or other manual communication modes and English, for Deaf and hearing consumers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide substitute interpreting in the K-12 educational setting per contracts with local school districts.
  • Liaise with students, faculty, and staff to identify, develop, promote and sustain equity and inclusion for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students in curricular and co-curricular campus activities.
  • Collaborate with various UM departments to implement inclusive spaces in line with the UM mission of inclusive prosperity.
  • Evaluate appropriate applications of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Interpret /translate expressively and receptively for the UM community including students, staff, faculty & visitors in a variety of settings using consecutive and/or simultaneous strategies.
  • Evaluate and negotiate meaning between two languages, ASL and English, while interpreting in a manner that conforms to the recognized linguistic, cultural and professional norms.
  • Critically analyze language competencies and apply knowledge of linguistic differences between different types of signed languages.
  • Perform team interpretation duties with colleagues by engaging in discussions about linguistic and cultural processes, producing cohesive interpretations, managing team relationships and problem solving.
  • Abide by a flexible work schedule as student schedules change, meetings cancel/reschedule and UM events schedules ebb and flow.
  • Track local, national and global trends & news impacting the D/HH community.
  • Track and apply local, state & federal laws impacting the D/HH community.

Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to perform ASL-English interpretation strategies to produce effective, bilingual interpretations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate conversationally using ASL including expressive and receptive skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to perform consecutive and simultaneous interpreting strategies.
  • Knowledge of the linguistic differences between various signed systems.
  • Knowledge of various assistive listening devices.
  • Knowledge of cross-cultural differences and the implications for interpreting in various settings.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of major and minor cultures within America and the impacts on Deaf culture.
  • Demonstrate critical analysis skill for analyzing current research, literature and trends in the profession.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members, students and the campus community in a manner that respects cultural differences and professional standards at all phases of the interpreting process.
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers, word processing software and the ability to learn other software.
  • Knowledge of state, and federal laws that impact the Deaf community and the interpreting profession.
  • Knowledge of state and national interpreter credentials.

Minimum Required Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in ASL-English Interpretation, education, linguistics, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of experience working as a sign language interpreter.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the Demand-Control Schema to all phases of the interpreting process.
  • National certification from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Position Details:

Position Title: Sign Language Interpreter II

Position Number: 100070

Department: Office for Disability Equity

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and varied as needed.

Salary: $20.343/hr. Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
