Job Summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s Parking & Transportation Services department is searching for a Shuttle/Escort Driver. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will be responsible for providing a safe, secure and dependable transportation systems for the campus community.  You will operate shuttle buses and multi-passenger vans on both predetermined routes making stops at designated locations and on a call-out to student residences within an approximate on and one-half mile radius of campus, or between any university building, including university off-campus housing.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Being responsible for safety and security of passengers by immediately reporting any criminal or suspicious activity, including any incidents when passenger(s) create a disturbance or pose a threat to others or requesting medical assistance for ill or injured passengers;
  • Reporting hazardous road conditions and any traffic citations, violations or incidents to the police dispatcher;
  • Safely operating escort bus or other assigned vehicle while on duty, including conducting a visual and physical inspection of the assigned vehicle before and during;
  • Refueling and cleaning the interior of the vehicle as needed, and immediately reporting any maintenance problems or concerns to the Vehicle Maintenance Officer, on-duty Shift Supervisor or Coordinator, and/or Team Leader;
  • Following all required traffic laws as contained in Title 18, The PA Vehicle Code, and all Federal DOT regulations and requirements for CDL operators;
  • Maintaining constant direct contact with and follow all instructions and directions from the team leader; 
  • Maintaining direct communications with the police dispatcher via two-way mobile radio.
  • Following all established routes, and comply fully with all established department guidelines, rules and protocols;
  • Abiding by all F.C.C regulations regarding the use of and communication over a licensed radio frequency.

Weekend and evening hours and shift work are required. Designated as an essential employee, may be required to remain on duty beyond normal shift and/or be available on a 24-hour basis to report for duty without prior notice due to emergencies or manpower shortages. Will be exposed to the elements as well as various road conditions while driving. Must be able to pass pre-employment/pre-placement drug and alcohol test as well as be subject to post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing as necessary. Driver history check required, must have a driving record free of violations and crashes. Required to wear a uniform, must be available for call-out, willing to join the appropriate local/union.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to deal diplomatically, politely, and courteously with a diverse campus population in a professional manner;
  • Ability to deal with difficult individuals while maintaining composure, and be able to keep time schedules;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to understand and follow motor vehicle/traffic laws;
  • Ability to understand and follow directions and to give clear direction to other;
  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records;
  • Demonstrate strong reasoning and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to maintain safe and secure environment within the vehicle.


  • High school or GED required;
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement is required;
  • Minimum 1-3 years of driving experience is required;
  • Must be capable of using a computer to send and receive email and to utilize application software for submission of hours worked.
