Job Description

Arizona State University (ASU) is looking for an experienced fabrication shop specialist to support ASU student, faculty, staff and affiliate use of the 17,000 sq. ft. fabrication shop at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center in downtown Chandler.

The ASU Chandler Innovation Center fabrication shop is a university-wide resource available to ASU students, faculty, staff and affiliates for work on ASU projects starting Fall 2023. The fabrication shop contains a wood shop, metal shop, MIG and TIG welding, machine shop, sewing, 3D printing, laser cutting, and several 2D and 3D design workstations. The shop is part of a 33,297 sq. ft. facility featuring flexible use classroom, meeting, event and office space.

The Shop Specialist supports shop users with specialized equipment in a manner which prioritizes both safety, customer service, and learning. The Shop Specialist contributes to creating an environment which encourages and supports users in completing their projects.

Responsibilities include training shop users on the safe use of specialized equipment, assisting shop users in using specialized equipment,  instructing classes on shop equipment and mentoring users on the creation of their projects.

Successful candidates are skilled in a variety of shop equipment including wood working, laser cutting, welding, machining and milling, textiles, 3D printing, and electronics; possess working knowledge of equipment safety, and have experience creating their own projects and sharing details of projects completed.

The Shop Specialist PRN is based at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center in downtown Chandler. Work hours are as needed.

Salary Range

$26.44 per hour


Essential Duties

  • Serves as subject matter expert on specialty shop equipment and assists shop users in the safe and effective use of equipment
  • Supervises use of shop equipment to ensure safe and effective operation of equipment
  • Provides a high level of customer service to shop users
  • Mentors shop space users to assist with fabrication of their project
  • Prepares equipment, tools and supplies for user equipment reservations
  • Instructs and demonstrates skill in at least one traditional subject area and one digital fabrication subject areas
  • Certifies individuals for use of the equipment, updates user permissions in the scheduling system
  • Supports the development and implementation of policies and procedures in support of a safe operating environment which encourages rather than discourages
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge in at least one traditional equipment subject area:
    • Machining
    • Woodworking
    • Metalworking
    • Electronics
    • Textiles
  • Demonstrated knowledge in at least one digital fabrication subject area:
    • Laser cutting
    • 3D printing
    • CNC routing
    • CNC machining
  • Experience instructing safety and basic use fabrication classes as well as advanced skill based workshops
  • At least one year of experience in customer service, hospitality, or retail environment
  • Evidence of effective communication skills

Working Environment

Onsite work at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center (ACIC) is required.
Requires a flexible working schedule in order to accommodate scheduled use of the shop which will include evenings and weekends.
Work duties are performed in an environmentally controlled shop setting.
Activities include use of office equipment including a laptop computer and shop equipment including complex and heavy machinery; subject to extended periods of standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds.
