About the Department
The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center (SLC) was founded in 2002 to assist in the development of the next generation of values-based leaders. In partnership with corporate, governmental, educational, non-profit, and youth development organizations, the mission of SLC is to inspire, educate, and develop values-based leaders committed to personal integrity, professional ethics, and selfless service. Our core values are compassion, integrity, diversity, and social responsibility.
Learn more about the SLC and the legacy of General Shelton here: https://sheltonleadership.ncsu.edu/about-us/

Signature programs of the SLC include the Red Hat Shelton Challenge for high school students, the Shelton Forum, a professional conference held annually, Shelton Scholars, a premier scholarship program, and the Chancellor’s Leadership Development program for first generation and/or rural college students. Our Center also offers a wide range of values-based leadership programming for pre-college, college, and professional organizations as well as two leadership minors for NC State students.
As an organization that works across all colleges, the SLC seeks to become a connector for all leadership opportunities within the University, providing external sources with up-to-date information relative to all leadership programs and education offered by the University; and providing internal University partners with information on collaboration opportunities and, in general, with access to a communication hub for leadership topics.
