Job Summary

Under the general direction of the HDFCCC Director of Strategic Initiatives and working closely with the Associate Director for Population Sciences, the SF CAN Program Manager will direct relevant activities of the San Francisco Cancer Initiative (SF CAN).

The SF CAN Program Manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, helping to plan leadership events, meetings, and activities, providing academic support to leadership and faculty, and supporting other relevant initiatives and activities. They will also be responsible for helping to prepare the annual budget for SF CAN and all of its task forces, tracking monthly expenditures to compare against budget, and preparing the annual progress report. In addition, they will act as the principal SF CAN liaison to the HDFCCC Office of Community Engagement and will ensure that any SF CAN activities that involve community engagement will collaborate with members of that office.

The SF CAN Program Manager will be knowledgeable about HDFCCC population research and issues related to the catchment area. They will work with stakeholders to identify relevant policy issues and develop corresponding implementation plans. The SF CAN Program Manager will represent the HDFCCC and SF CAN and be the first point of contact to internal and external stakeholders associated with SF CAN. This could include partnership with local and state government representatives on policy and advocacy related to SF CAN objectives.

The SF CAN Program Manager will provide academic support to SF CAN leadership and faculty, including performing independent literature reviews and helping to prepare grants, manuscripts, and presentations. They will work with Task Force leaders to ensure their activities align with their individual logic models and will track activities and outcomes against those logic models.

The Program Manager will be expected to be knowledgeable about current developments, research, and initiatives in population science, both at UCSF and in the broader community. They will use this knowledge to advise SF CAN leadership, maintain adequate resources for program activities, direct stakeholders to the appropriate sources for information, and ensure decisions are made in line with HDFCCC priorities and goals.

Department Description

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) is redefining what is possible by advancing cancer research and patient care. By unifying outstanding researchers and clinicians, the center minimizes cancer incidence, establishes new frontiers in cancer care, and improves our patients’ lives. We have received the prestigious designation of “comprehensive” from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  We combine basic science, clinical research, epidemiology, cancer control and patient care throughout the University of California, San Francisco.

The San Francisco Cancer Initiative (SF CAN) is a long-term communitywide initiative that has been designed to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality in the city and county of San Francisco by harnessing the power of collective knowledge to implement broad-scale, evidence-based interventions and policies. SF CAN partners with multiple entities, including the San Francisco Department of Health, nongovernmental organizations, community groups, and cancer care institutions.  SF CAN is currently targeting the most common cancers (breast, lung and other tobacco-induced, prostate, colorectal, and liver) which collectively account for approximately 50 percent of cancer incidence and mortality in San Francisco and for which evidence-based interventions exist.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training preferred.
  • Solid fundraising experience.
  • Knowledge of campus and institutional administrative policies.
