HJF is seeking a Serology Medical Technologist III/Team Lead to support the support the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to DCB.

The Serology Technologist III/Team Lead is primarily responsible for oversight and performance of serology and immunological assays in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited HIV Diagnostics and Reference Laboratory (HDRL). The incumbent will perform assays/procedures in strict accordance with the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Policies, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), accrediting bodies, and U.S. regulatory agencies to include the CAP, DoD Clinical Laboratory Information Program (CLIP), and the U.S. FDA. They will be responsible for preparing and analyzing samples, operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art instrumentation, and ensuring adherence to all quality control procedures in support of clinical diagnostic and clinical research initiatives.

Responsibilities: 


  • Performs assays for the detection and confirmation of HIV and Hepatitis B in a high throughput laboratory as well as performance of serological assays for other infectious diseases as needed with a high level of expertise and proficiency to train others. In addition, performing specimen processing duties in accordance with laboratory SOPs, manufacturer guidelines and CAP/ FDA regulations. Ensures proper handling of specimens, data entry, aliquoting specimen storage, retrieval, inventory, and disposal activities.
  • Reviews and verifies raw run data, quality control and ensures all regulatory compliance standards and SOPs are met. Ensures proper entry of specimen data and testing results into databases or LIS.
  • Coordinates and performs the validation of new assays, equipment, and materials as required with the Serology Senior Team Leads and Serology Technical Supervisor and QA Team.
  • Performs, documents and qualified to train others for all weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance of equipment in accordance with SOPs.
  • Ensures and verifies compliance with all Quality Assurance (QA) program requirements including but not limited to Quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting activities and documentation in accordance with QA and departmental established SOPs.
  • Works with and mentors direct reports to identify problems that may affect test performance and reporting of patient results; corrects the problem and immediately notifies the Serology Technical Supervisor.
  • Aids the Technical Supervisor in the development and deployment of administrative duties to include but not limited to the writing/drafting of SOPs, providing input for process improvements and filing of documents following established department processes.
  • Responsible for Data Tran Monitoring system as required including after hours, holidays and weekends.
  • Responsible for performing other assigned tasks in accordance with the applicable safety regulations and instructions.
  • Must be able to perform all essential job duties for Serology Medical Technologist I and II.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required trainings and Lab Leadership meetings.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent laboratory and technical skills. Excellent laboratory and technical skills. Ability to work independently once trained, excellent record keeping ability, excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to identify areas for process improvement for better efficiency.

    Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required.

    Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum 6-8 years of experience required.

    Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Medical Technologist, ASCP or equivalent certification required.

    Physical Capabilities: Requires lifting materials up to 50 lbs. 

    Work Environment: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, or exposure to chemicals. Conditions that pose risk of exposure to pathogens.

    Work Arrangement: 100% on-site.

    Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust.
