Anticipated Hiring Range

$8,851.00 - $9,275.00 Per Month; $106,332.00 - $111,300.00 Annually

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

Under the direction of a commanding officer, the Police Sergeant performs supervisory duties to include, but are not limited to, making work assignments, monitoring and reporting work activities, and providing on the job training, mentoring and assistance to subordinates. Police Sergeants plan, assign, coordinate and supervise assigned staff on a shift, task force or unit on a regular basis; develop, implement and enforce campus and department policies, procedures, and regulations within the assigned area of responsibility; provide on-the-job training, development and evaluation to assigned staff; may assume command in the absence of the superior officer and assist in administrative duties; participate in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures; act as team leader on a particular investigation task force or project ( e.g. critical response unit, special evidence discovery and evaluation team, field training, defensive tactics instruction, crime prevention and community relations programs); assume the role of designated Watch Commander or Officer in Charge; and provide specialized training and assume a leadership role on special reaction teams (e.g. sexual assault or emergency medical).

Position Information

Provide Supervisory Support

  • Supervise officers assigned to patrol shift, or detectives assigned to Investigation’s Unit.
  • Evaluate assigned officers’ work performance.
  • Train and review work of new officers and civilian employees as assigned.
  • Provide shift supervision of assigned team as required.
  • Responsible for maintaining patrol staffing to include but not limited to staffing emergencies, special events, scheduled time off, etc.

Provide Investigative Support

  • Conduct investigations related to assigned cases or incidents which occur on or near campus during the assigned shift, and take necessary action within the limits of existing laws, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain current status of all investigative and preventive activities and prepare reports as requested.

Provide Administrative and Report Support

  • Participate in crime prevention activities: enforce laws, traffic regulations, apprehend and arrest criminal violators on or off campus.
  • Provide security for large gatherings, assemblies or other activities such as registration, athletic events, or social events.
  • Provide general information and assistance to faculty, staff and students and the general public.
  • Prepare reports covering observed irregularities, violations of the law, or campus regulations.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, crime prevention and safety programs.

Minimum Qualifications

The Sergeant classification is the highest level in the Police Series and is a first line supervisory classification, requiring a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures. Work assignments include primary supervisory responsibility for a shift, program, unit or task force, and general law enforcement and specialized work assignments performed by other positions in this series. Incumbents require graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy, a Basic Course Certificate, and three or more years of active law enforcement experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Valid California driver’s license.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy and a Basic Course Certificate.
  • Three or more years of active law enforcement experience.
  • Completion of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum Standards for Police Officer Candidates (California Government Code Section 1031)
  • Must have no felony convictions.
  • Must have no misdemeanor convictions containing elements of domestic violence.
  • Must successfully complete fingerprint and records check including local, state and federal criminal records.
  • Must satisfy citizenship requirements detailed in Government code 1031 (a) and 1031.5. Be a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident alien who has applied for citizenship and obtains citizenship within three years of application date.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age by the time of sworn appointment.
  • Must have good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation which will be conducted as prescribed in the POST Administrative Manual, and must be completed prior to appointment date.
  • Must be free from any physical, emotional, and mental condition, which might adversely affect the exercise of powers of a police officer.
  • Must be able to read and write at the levels necessary to perform the job of a police officer as determined by the use of the POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery or other job-related tests of reading and writing ability.
  • Three or more years of active patrol law enforcement experience.
  • Completion of a POST Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership, training and direction to assigned personnel.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate employees effectively.
  • Ability to assist in developing department policies and procedures.
  • Five years or more of active law enforcement experience to include patrol and investigative functions.
  • Supervisory experience in the form of formal supervisor position, team leader, or acting supervisory roles.
  • Working knowledge of public safety, including law enforcement methods, traffic control, arrest and safety procedures in a campus environment, existing criminal codes, law, etc.
  • General knowledge of crime prevention, first aid and CPR.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations, asses law enforcement or other hazardous situations, determine an appropriate course of action, prepare clear and concise procedural reports, maintain cooperative and working relationships with the campus community, general public, and local and state police agencies.
  • Possession of a P.O.S.T. Intermediate and/or Advanced Certificate.
  • Possession of an undergraduate baccalaureate degree from an accredited academic institution.

Required License/Certification

  • Incumbent must hold a valid California Driver’s License and complete/maintain compliance with the California State University (CSU) Defensive Driver’s Training course throughout employment.
  • Incumbent must maintain current licenses, certificates, permits, or other items required for this position; and
    immediately report to supervisor the loss or expiration of same.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or
without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to complete all the physical requirements of active duty
as a Sergeant.

Work Environment:

  • Must be able to perform law enforcement and emergency related duties in various environments (indoor, outdoor, inclement weather, and other adverse conditions, etc.).
  • Must be able to work various rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to work on short notice.
  • May be required to travel, including during the evenings/nights and weekends.
  • Personal protective equipment required: police uniform (as described in the University Police General Orders Manual) and duty belt with weapon.
  • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
