Position Focus:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of University Initiatives and Presidential Communications, the senior writer will support external and internal communications. The senior writer will translate complex concepts into powerful language for a wide range of audiences through speeches, reports, presentations, op-eds, web content, and collateral material. They will exercise sound editorial judgment and maintain discretion. The senior writer will actively edit or provide feedback on presidential and university communications drafted by others at the university. The person in this position will work closely with colleagues across the university to ensure mutual alignment with institutional messages, themes, and priorities. 

This position is Hybrid, but may consider Fully Remote for the right candidate. 


Essential Duties

1. Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of University Initiatives and Presidential Communications, prepare polished final drafts of high-level strategic communications for internal and external audiences, including researching, consulting with relevant colleagues, and writing original works. 2. Translate complex concepts into powerful language for various audiences, including speeches, reports, presentations, op-eds, web content, and collateral material. 3. Actively edit and provide feedback on presidential communications drafted by others at the university. 4. Collaborate closely with peers, including the Office of the President and other university colleagues.  5. Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field and six years of experience in public relations, journalism, corporate communications, political work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to write powerfully, effectively, creatively, and clearly across various media—often while working under tight deadlines.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to capture the distinctive voice of the president in speeches, remarks, op-eds, presentations, and other written works.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to conceive and write publicly consumed material for senior leadership for internal and external audiences.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated superior writing and editing skills, including broad knowledge of grammar and style.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated expertise in writing speeches for leaders of complex organizations. Ability to manage multiple priorities and a track record of delivering work free of errors and on time.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Demonstrated experience in conceiving and writing publicly consumed material and material for internal audiences for leadership. Demonstrated knowledge of Yale, its organization, alumni, students, and faculty members.
