Do you have a passion for shaping ideas, working in a deadline-driven environment, and crafting paragraphs and words that speak to the reader? Are you enthusiastic about copy editing, impactful reporting, and customer service? Would you like to work with leaders in the fields of software engineering, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) on projects that matter to the Department of Defense, government agencies, and private industry?

We’re looking for a Senior Writer/Editor and Content Strategist to join our Public Relations team at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) to write and edit technical news and blogs for the SEI website; create and manage engaging social media messaging; and maintain and improve the public perception of the SEI through effective media relations. Working collaboratively with SEI technical staff, you will help them create professional materials that communicate the innovations and benefits of their research.

What you’ll do

  • You have excellent communication planning, writing, and copyediting skills.

  • You understand what constitutes effective social media messaging and campaign planning, and you have facility in using most popular social media platforms.

  • You have experience working with reporters and media outlets to promote the work of technology researchers.

  • You are committed to customer service for subject-matter experts, but you are also a strong advocate for the reader.

  • You have a keen eye for detail and a strong focus on quality.

  • You have strong organizational, time management, and project management skills and can prioritize multiple tasks.

  • You have the social skills to work closely with technical staff to plan and develop written technical materials and interview subject-matter experts.

  • You have significant experience with web content management systems and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word.

  • You can work with minimal or no supervision, but you participate in team decision making.

  • You are willing to travel within the SEI and CMU community—and occasionally to sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings—to support the SEI’s mission (<5%).

  • You will be subject to a background check

  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
