Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking a versatile and talented Senior Writer to contribute their skills to our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging planning and communication.


The ideal candidate will be a proactive and skilled writer, with the demonstrated ability to write longform narrative reports, craft thoughtful Q+As, and distill complex subject matter in a way that resonates with a large, diverse, and curious readership, both internal and external. This person will also conceptualize and/or contribute to the creation of content.


This role is expected to work between 15 and 19 hours per week, is categorized as Casual, and is not eligible for university benefits.


Specific duties and responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean, Project Manager, and Taskforce (comprised of staff, faculty, students and alumni) to develop and produce a strong narrative that outlines the strategic plan for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging at the business school for the next 3-5 years.
  • Generate content for the narrative report (Roadmap).
  • Meet/work with school partners (web, marketing, taskforce members) to create or revise content.
  • Support additional communications planning efforts for the rollout, including Q&A and web content.
  • Synthesize feedback from including focus groups and comment period queries.
  • Other Duties as Assigned 5%


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent at interacting with faculty and senior leadership.
  • Excellent listener.
  • Able to synthesis information and translate into an accurate and compelling narrative.
  • Must possess superior writing and editing skills for both print and electronic media.
  • Versatile writer/editor, capable of crafting compelling news articles, academically focused material, and marketing copy.
  • Proven ability to work both independently, and as part of a team with results-oriented approach.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, be well organized, and can set priorities, thrive in an extremely fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of/experience in public affairs/marketing writing for academia preferred.
  • Ability to facilitate problem resolution, foster confidence, and trust.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years related experience. Writing samples may be requested during the selection process.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of full-time work experience in journalism, marketing, media relations, or related communications field, with four years of successful editing and writing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new editorial content, while also maintaining a collaborative relationship with faculty and staff.
  • Work habits of being organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Desire to be an active part of a small team.
  • Welcome and benefit from feedback from editors, peers, and managers.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid in-person/remote environment, as needed.

Starting Salary Range: $27.33 - $47.94 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)
