Position Focus:

The Senior Web Designer will help to source/curate the content for daily distribution over interactive websites. The focus of this position will be on coordinating, developing, and managing content in partnership with software engineers and designers within Yale’s Biomedical Informatics & Data Science department (BIDS) and YSM Communications. The role may require broader partnerships with national consortia and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position will not have direct reports but will serve as a senior partner with other designers, developers, and software engineers on staff. The candidate will have a strong background in web design and written communication and have a unique ability to communicate complex scientific ideas through compelling design.  Occasionally the candidate will participate in communications through print publications and newsletters.

Essential Duties

1. Leads and serves as project manager for projects developing websites, conceptualizing new initiatives, planning and implementing website structure, user interface, technical documentation, and graphic elements. 2. Directs the work of designers, technologists and trainers to develop websites. Oversees distributed content and subject matter experts and creates a cohesive team environment. 3. Manages network of content contributors across multiple departments to ensure accuracy, consistency, and elimination of duplicative content. 4. Provides quality management to assure accuracy and consistency. 5. Monitors website search engine entries, Google analytics, create reports for leadership and reorganize content appropriately. 6. Monitors and manages requests for website changes and associated social media. 7. Represents ITS on committees and project teams. 8. Defines and writes procedures, facilitates and supports business process change related to managing and maintaining website content. 9. Ensures content is technically accurate and written in an approachable style. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and a minimum of five years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated excellence in graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and XD) with a strong portfolio that showcases an ability to create visually appealing layouts, typography, palettes, logos, graphic assets, scientific illustrations, and diagrams. 


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proficient in UX design software such as Figma, conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes of user interfaces that follow WCAG and ADA compliance guidelines, and performing usability testing. 


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proficient in web accessibility, SEO strategies, and web analytics tools. Knowledgeable in front-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, and frameworks, such as Bootstrap and Tailwind. 


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Skilled in video editing and multimedia content creation using tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro.
