Position Summary
The Office of the University Architect (OUA) is looking for an experienced Urban Designer to work with multi-disciplinary teams on a wide range of project types including campus planning, feasibility studies, and urban design at multiple scales (campus/site/building).
The position is involved with numerous university projects and initiatives on and off campus. The Senior Urban Designer ensures projects are planned and designed to fit in with and strengthen surrounding urban fabric. The position works in collaboration with Office of Real Estate, Government & Community Affairs and other units on external-facing issues impacting the St. Louis community.
A successful candidate will advance the University’s commitment to social equity, inclusion and accessibility through design. Additional responsibilities include ensuring best practices, quality, schedule, code and budget on projects. An interest in placemaking and community design (building, street, and public realm opportunities) is necessary.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates the planning, design, development with both internal staff and outside consultants to deliver plans and projects.
  • Develops long, intermediate, and short-term plans for future buildings and sites, assuring that the needs of departments, neighborhoods and other stakeholders involved are represented.
  • Collaborates with University departments and stakeholders to develop project scope and budgets.
  • Gathers, interprets, and prepares data and graphics for studies, reports, and recommendations.
  • Prepares and communicates information and updates on off-campus projects to internal and external constituents.
  • Reviews and approves preliminary drawings and specifications for University compliance and departmental needs.
  • Manages Urban Design staff providing daily guidance and direction, assigning tasks, monitoring employee performance and providing feedback.
  • Manages multi-modal mobility and transportation planning including public transit, bicycles and pedestrians
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment, typically working at desk or table, repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement.
  • Uses office equipment and ability to move to on, and off-campus locations as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Urban Design, Architecture or related field and 10 years of related experience.
  • Previous experience in urban design work.
  • Additional certifications or licenses demonstrating commitment to continued education in relevant areas.
  • Prior experience working in higher education is a plus. 
  • Self-motivated, responsible and mature individual. Must be detail-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills capable of interacting with a wide range of stakeholders. Sensitivity to and ability to navigate group and organizational dynamics. Ability to communicate, present and maintain professional working relationships across a wide range of individuals and levels within the university including upper management and end users. Able to adapt to a variety of styles to meet the needs of a diverse audience.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, active listening, conflict resolution, and the ability to deal with difficult and sensitive situations in a positive manner. Strong graphic visualization and presentation skills are essential in this position.
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of the urban design, architecture and construction industry.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. Capable of working with and motivating design professionals and contractors.
  • Software skills including Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), AutoCAD/Revit, and GIS required.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, or engineering or related field and five years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of 3D modelling software such as Rhino and Sketchup Pro.REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: LEED Accredited Professional.

Salary Range
$75,400.00 - $132,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
