What you need to know

  • TTI is a Texas based agency. This position has the flexibility of a hybrid remote option with two days in a TTI Texas based office. This can be discussed further during the interview process.

  • The salary range for position is commensurate. Final salary will be determined based on the applicant's qualifications and experience.

Job Summary:

This position is expected to serve as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or contribute as a significant lead in research and proposal development. The TTI Assistant Research Scientist requires a highly functional, self-motivated, highly skilled, energetic person that is interested in solving transportation challenges. Functions as an independent researcher that contributes significant technical expertise/skills to multi-disciplinary teams that work on a broad range of topics pertaining to multimodal transportation planning and policy analysis.  Works independently under the general direction of the TTI Program Manager and Division Head. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Required Essential Duties:

  • Performs applied research duties, including data collection, analysis, coordination, and supervision: Plan, schedule, coordinate, and report detailed phases of research and development projects. Evaluate and document data collection requirements and activities. Coordinate data gathering activities and gather data needed for research tasks  Performs research on externally funded research projects, and develop research proposals for national, state, local and private sponsors. Assemble, organize, analyze, document, and archive datasets. Synthesize data and extract meaningful statistics and trends. Analyze and develop potential new techniques, policies, procedures, visualizations, and recommendations. Conduct the necessary literature review and background information search to support techniques and methodologies used, as well as documenting past research for reporting purposes. Manages tasks and communicate and coordinate with others. (50%)

  • Author or co-author reports, technical memoranda, journal articles, training materials for external users, and presentations. Prepare and give presentations to existing and potential sponsors, academic settings, or conference settings. Prepare, schedule, conduct, and document research meetings (5%)

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams comprising of research staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and support staff to ensure the completion of high-quality deliverables on-time and to the expectations of the client. (30%)

  • Actively seek and obtain externally funded research projects, performing work on basic and applied technology problems, and participate in research proposals serving as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or contribute as a significant lead in the proposal. (5%)

  • Other duties as assigned. (10%)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in related field

  • Three years of related professional experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong quantitative skills, for example, experience in computer programming, statistics and/or database design, plus a willingness to learn new skills and research methods.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills along with interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), in Database software (e.g., MS ACCESS, SQL, VBA, etc.), in visualization software (Tableau, etc.), and in Statistical Software (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, etc.).

  • ArcGIS skills and Python

  • Ability to work independently, have a strong work ethic, detail orientated, problem solver, and be dependable.

  • Must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Preferred Experience, Other Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. and one year of relevant experience.

  • Knows and effectively uses the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization; continues development of technical expertise and knowledge through experience and application.

  • Experience identifying solutions for current, near-term and long-range transportation.

  • Experience in transportation planning/engineering.

  • Advanced data visualization skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery
