Senior Systems Administrator Linux System Administration in Information Technology

UTHealth Houston is looking for a Linux Systems Administrator to be a part of the Infrastructure & Operational Support group within DCO. This team focuses on messaging, Active Directory, load balancing, Linux, DNS, mobile device management, Citrix & other enterprise-level systems in addition to many smaller systems and applications. Support for these systems includes design, implementation, support, patching, troubleshooting, and working closely with application owners, peers, and customers to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting, and upgrades.

The position requires expertise in administering RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Oracle Linux, encompassing server installation, operating system configuration, security implementation, and troubleshooting of specialized systems and applications. Both physical and virtual systems are part of this role. A good understanding of storage subsystems as they relate to system optimization and configuration is essential, as well as practical knowledge of networking.

UTHealth Houston is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. Data Center Operations (DCO), under the direction of the Infrastructure Team at UTHealth Houston, operates the university’s primary data centers at UCT and Guhn Rd.  DCO also administers standards for other data centers that are a part of the UTHealth campus. DCO is comprised of five areas: Database & Application Support, Infrastructure & Operational Support, Data Center Operations Services, SPH Data Center Management / Virtualization Team, and the Cloud Team.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Responsible for all procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems, and computer system software.
2. Responsible for all activities related to system administration. 
3. Assign personnel to various projects, direct their activities, and evaluate their work.
4. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, configuration, security, and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software. 
5. Implements operating system enhancements that will improve the reliability, safety, and performance of the system.
6. Performs programming and testing. 
7. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.
8. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the computer system.
9. Determines and implements security and performance improvement activities.
10. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements. 
11. Implements system software projects.
12. Plans and supervises training of systems administrator personnel.
13. Presents technical briefings.
14. Participates in formulation and implementation of installation standards and procedures.
15. Attends professional conferences and acts in place of supervisor as needed.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.


Certification/Skills:

Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and computer operating systems. Familiar with WEB technology, database concepts and networking.  

The position requires proficiency in providing backend systems support for client-server applications and a comprehensive understanding of the system design lifecycle (SDLC). The candidate must possess demonstrated implementation skills for enterprise-level solutions and experience in configuring and managing SSL certificates. A fundamental grasp of networking technologies is also required. Additionally, the candidate should have practical knowledge of system monitoring tools.

Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Use of Microsoft Teams and M365 tools, such as Planner and Azure DevOps.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology, or related experience in lieu of education

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. 

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
