Job Description:

The Deaconescu Lab at Brown University seeks a Senior Staff Scientist to contribute to their research mission. The laboratory’s primary focus lies on bacterial stress responses. The Senior Staff Scientist will take a lead role to utilize a combination of biochemical, biophysical and structural techniques (e.g. X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy) in these areas to independently perform various experiments and tests.


The focus of the work will be on structure determination by cryo-EM (specimen preparation, data collection, data processing and analysis) and assay development for complementing our structural analyses. The lab has its own Vitrobot and crystallization robots, and microscope time is readily available.

Examples of recent work from the Deaconescu Lab are: Brugger et al., Journal of Biological Chemistry (2023,2024), Schwartz et al, Protein Science (2021), Brugger et al, Nature Communications (2020), Dorich et al, Genes & Development (2019), Vemu et al. Science (2018), Le TT et al. Cell (2018), Szyk et al, Cell (2014).


This is fixed term position with an end date of December 31, 2024.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Required: Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field with 3-5 years laboratory/research experience

  • Strongly preferred: PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Previous experience with cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography and biochemistry is preferred

  • Outstanding problem-solving skills, ability to implement solutions

  • Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (e.g. MS office, Google Suite, structural biology software etc.)

  • Ability to collect and analyze data

  • Ability to work independently and, in a team

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills and training

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
