This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work. Remote work for individuals who reside outside of Texas but within the US and its territories will be considered and is subject to Central Office approval.

Purpose

This Senior Software Engineer position uses advanced systems analysis, development, and integration skills to address complex technical issues for Academic Information Systems and its campus partners, and leads the organization in the development and application of best practices uses a broad range of technical solutions. 


Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze technical problems. Design, develop, and document software solutions where maintainability and reduction of technical debt are primary considerations. Integrate systems with functionality interoperability. Champion test-driven development and lead code reviews. 
  • Develop system architectures and design patterns so that solutions can be replicated for sustainability. Consult on technical architecture solutions across AIS. Provide mentorship and training to junior technical staff.
  • Provide advanced operational support to include monitoring systems, providing customer service, investigating issues, and remediating code deficiencies.
  • Communicate effectively with community members and stakeholders to elicit and document requirements, present solutions, and investigate and resolve issues. Manage technical projects independently. 
  • Provide input for the development of departmental standards, process improvements, and technical documentation. Represent the department and the University at industry conferences, seminars, and events.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher 
  • Three years of production software engineering experience.  
  • Deep knowledge of software development principles, methods, and techniques.  
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, testing, and debugging complex software applications.  
  • Ability to design systems for high availability, security, manageability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.  
  • Demonstrated experience developing and consuming APIs.  
  • Production experience with relational and NoSQL databases and Unix/Linux command line utilities.  
  • High proficiency with Python, JavaScript, and Typescript.  
  • Ability to mentor team members and ensure that implemented solutions meet expected quality standards and fulfill the architectural vision.  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.  

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

  • More than three years of software engineering experience.  
  • Production experience with AWS Lambda, AWS CDK, AWS Step Functions, and AWS DynamoDB.  
  • Familiarity with agile software methodologies.  
  • Proficiency in additional software languages.  
  • Experience developing and maintaining software applications at the University of Texas at Austin.  
  • Certified as one or more of the following: AWS Certified Developer, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect.  


Salary Range

$95,000 + depending on qualifications
