Senior Scientist - Public Health Genomics

The Center for Public Health Genomics at the University of Virginia Farber Lab

is seeking to hire a Senior Scientist to work on collaborative projects at the cutting edge of human genetics and genomics research under the supervision of Dr. Charles R. Farber.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will join a collegial and productive research team focused on the genetic analysis of complex skeletal traits and osteoporosis. The candidate will work on an exciting and innovative project designed to experimentally identify causal genes for loci identified by genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of bone mineral density (BMD) and define the mechanisms through which they impact bone. The candidate will be expected to utilize a wide-range of experimental tools, including cell culture, RNA interference, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, development and characterization of mouse models, among others. The is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative project; thus, the candidate will be expected to work well both independently and in a team setting. The candidate will be responsible for writing manuscripts describing their work, advising graduate and undergraduate students and presenting at national and international conferences.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Doctoral degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or related degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related field

  • Knowledge of and experience with molecular biology techniques and cell culture

  • Strong work ethic

  • Ability to work independently combined with willingness to work in a highly interactive and collegial group

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Prior experience in bone biology and working with mouse models of human disease
