Senior Scientist - Discovery Biology

Updated: 4 months ago
Location: Cambridge, MASSACHUSETTS
Deadline: 10 Jan 2024

What You Will Achieve

The Inflammation & Immunology Research Unit (I&I RU) in Cambridge is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Scientist to join a new Discovery Neuroinflammation Group. This role will involve defining, developing, and executing in vitro assays to: 1) explore mechanisms contributing to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, and 2) to identify, validate, and prioritize targets for modulating neurodegenerative diseases. The ideal candidate will have expertise in culturing CNS cell types and experience evaluating protein homeostasis and cellular degradation pathways, such as autophagy and lysosomal trafficking/function. The candidate will work both independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams and will be responsible for providing rationale and delivering data to support portfolio projects.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Contribute to strategic vision for interrogating mechanisms of dysregulated protein homeostasis in neurodegenerative diseases, such as autophagy and lysosomal trafficking/function.
  • Establish in vitro neuronal cell models to identify and evaluate targets using genetic and pharmacological approaches.
  • Employ a variety of molecular and cellular biology techniques, such as RNA/protein expression analysis, biochemical assays, flow cytometry, and high content/live cell imaging.
  • Define approaches to optimize and troubleshoot experimental conditions, striving for accurate modeling of the CNS environment.
  • Independently design and execute experiments and interpret and track results. This includes being up to date on relevant literature and regular maintenance of electronic notebooks.
  • Organize, summarize, and present data in diverse forums, including internal and external meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and project teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must Have's

  • PhD in Biology, Neuroinflammation, Neuroscience or other related discipline with 1-3 years of experience or MS with 5+ years of relevant molecular and cellular biology experience. OR Biology, Neuroinflammation, Neuroscience or other related discipline with 9+ years of experience
  • Experience in and working knowledge of neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and protein homeostasis mechanisms.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to formulate next steps, provide recommendations, and enable data-driven decisions with a high-level of autonomy.

Nice to Have's

  • Hands-on experience with culturing CNS cell types, including immortalized, primary, and iPSC-derived cells.
  • Expertise in cutting-edge techniques for assessing cellular uptake, trafficking, and clearance pathways.
  • Experience with gene editing technologies, including CRISPR.
  • Knowledge of in vivo models of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration to inform in vitro to in vivo translation of target biology.
  • Preclinical pharmacology experience across diverse therapeutic modalities.
  • Publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Interest in educating and training other scientists as part of matrixed teams.
