Job Description Summary:
The Senior Scientist for the lab of Dr. Ryan Barnes, PhD working in the study of environmental DNA damage as it relates to mechanisms of DNA replication and genome stability. This position is responsible designing and conducting hands-on experiments utilizing human cell lines, then preparing, interpreting, analyzing, and compiling data into written articles for publication, manuscripts and for oral presentations. This position needs to be able to work independently and maintain strong working relationships with multiple personnel related to research activities.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD or MD/PhD in molecular biology/genetics (or related field); or MS, plus 5 years of applicable experience.

Work Experience: Hands-on experience with common laboratory techniques, such as:

  • Cell culture

  • Transfection

  • Generation of cell lines

  • Immunoblotting

  • Enzyme immunoassay

  • Immunofluorescent staining

  • DNA/RNA/Protein

  • Flow Cytometry

  • Microscopy

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

Typical molecular and cellular biology lab procedures:

  • Bacteria work for DNA preps

  • Lentivirus production

6 or more years of experience conducting cell biology experiments with DNA damaging agents to study:

  • DNA replication forks in cells

  • Levels of DNA damage and repair

  • Chromosome aberrations

  • Genome stability endpoints

Skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to present research results and draft manuscripts.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.

  • Lab management and organization

Job Duties

Research Overview: Work with PI and supervisor to design, perform, prioritize research projects and interpret results to propose future research or next steps.

  • Design and conduct hands-on experiments utilizing cell lines, isolated DNA, recombinant DNA, and proteins.

  • Conduct experiments utilizing different human and murine cell lines.

  • Manage daily lab needs such as supplies, organization, equipment upkeep, and safety requirements.

  • Prepare, interpret, analyze, and compile data into written articles for publication, manuscripts, grants, and for oral presentations.

  • Work independently and demonstrating success in developing strong working relationships with multiple personnel related to research and clinical activities.

  • Supervise, mentor and train research personnel in the project and within the Barnes laboratory, including graduate students, technicians, and/or summer students.

  • Apply for available funding mechanisms such as NCI R50.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department, understand and follow biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
