Purpose

 

We are seeking a Senior Scientist position to lead world class capabilities related to advanced battery technologies.  Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. The chosen candidate is expected to develop and execute research projects in the areas of 1) high energy density all solid-state batteries including, but not limited to, solid state cathode composites, solid electrolytes, and metal anodes, 2) emerging battery technologies, including but not limited to, advanced battery manufacturing, sodium-based batteries, sulfur-based batteries and lithium metal batteries, and 3) probing of interfacial and bulk phenomena in batteries by cutting-edge characterization techniques.

 

Candidates should have demonstrated records of technical accomplishments in 1) in battery materials and electrolytes, 2) cell design development, characterization, and performance evaluation, and 3) materials processing and manufacturing.  These research areas are aligned with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Vehicle Technologies and other DOE programs.

 

The Senior Scientist position is in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will primarily be conducted at ORNL’s Grid Research, Integration & Deployment Facility (GRID). The successful candidate will lead advanced battery science, collaborate with staff across ORNL, and will be expected to serve as technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings and interface with scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

 

  • Conceives, research and develops disruptive chemistries and materials for high-energy and high-power density batteries and emerging electrochemical storage systems.
  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects.
  • Develop and implement plans to exploit new programmatic opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
  • Work closely with the R&D staff to establish capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology.
  • Advance the reputation by consistently writing technical products such as proposals, publications, and artifacts to ensure high quality and consistency with ORNL standards.

    Basic Qualifications:

     

    • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of work experience in Energy Storage or Conversion.
    • A record of excellence in battery research and development as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal articles and/or issued patents.
    • A record of excellence in program development and project management.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
