Job Description:

This position provides expertise, leadership, and direction on risk mitigation, including loss prevention and reduction strategies, contractual risk transfer, indemnification, insurance, and risk prevention for faculty, staff, and students regarding activities worldwide. The Risk Manager manages the operations for the institution’s risk management and insurance programs, assists departments with loss control, provides for timely and comprehensive inquiries, determines actions to reduce or eliminate loss, manages the institution’s insurance programs, and provides support on litigation matters. The Risk Manager also reviews contracts and agreements to advise on indemnification and insurance requirements. In consultation with the General Counsel, this position sets strategic priorities and oversees development, implementation, and delivery of risk management programs to provide consistent direction, policy, and procedures for a broad range of institutional risk exposures. This position works collaboratively with the Risk Management Group at the Boston Consortium, with Berklee personnel, insurance brokers, adjusters, campus business services, claimants, and a broad range of institutional departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of institution-wide risk, loss control, and safety programs, and support departments by providing advice and support in the implementation of risk management strategies, training programs, and loss control techniques.

  • Develop, implement, and update loss control programs and safety awareness programs, including training.

  • In cooperation with General Counsel, establish and maintain control over the claims process to assure that claims are being settled fairly, consistently, and in the best interests of Berklee.

  • Keep abreast of the changing exposures and costs of risk control in order to advise senior managers on risk management policies and management efforts.

  • Identify and analyze risk exposures in order to procure appropriate and cost-effective insurance to protect the assets of the institution.

  • Administer the institution’s insurance and self-insured retention programs, including (but not limited to) assurance of timely renewals, issuances, provision of underwriting data, and amendment of coverage as exposures change.

  • Budget for and manage the institution’s insurance portfolio by assessing evolving risks and losses.

  • Assess agreements and contracts as needed to make recommendations related to indemnification provisions; limitations of liability; adequacy of Berklee’s policies to meet contractual requirements; and appropriate insurance limits for outside entities doing business with Berklee.

  • Coordinate institutional risk and insurance related programs including (but not limited to) risk related training programs; investigation of covered accidents/incidents; assessment of claims and liability; coordination of insurance settlements; and reference of claims to appropriate agencies.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in risk management, finance, business management, or related fields,  +7 years of experience in risk management, insurance, and business management. Advanced degree or applicable professional designation in insurance and risk management is strongly preferred (e.g., ARM, CPCU, CRM, CRMA).

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Excellent knowledge of the insurance and risk management industry, including all lines of coverage and risk management processes and practices in a broad range of insurance markets;

  • Excellent knowledge of business process and risk management principles and guidelines, and enterprise risk management;

  • Excellent knowledge of contractual risk mitigation strategies and ways to minimize risk.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Excellent project management, problem solving, analytical, strategic thinking, decision making, and planning skills;

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and negotiation skills;

  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others;

  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and financial management skills;

  • Ability to devise risk mitigation, risk transfer, and insurance strategies to protect institutional assets and personnel;

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines;

  • Advanced knowledge of Google Drive, Google Mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   Potential to supervise a student worker to assist with administrative tasks related to risk management and insurance related projects.
