Position Summary
Help in all day-to-day activities of the lab. This will include, but not be limited to maintaining lab equipment, checking and maintaining inventories of consumables needed for the lab, and supervision of technicians.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the maintenance of all lab equipment. Equipment and instruments are expected to be maintained, serviced, and repaired as required to ensure safe and efficient use. Contact appropriate repair vendors technicians and interact with them and internal lab personnel when repairs are necessary from non-university staff. Serve as responsible for the management of equipment paperwork so that it is organized, and available when requested. 
  • Screen, train, and supervise staff members.  Explain policies and procedures, assure appropriate procedures are followed, and review staff’s day to day actives.  Knowledge of all staff duties, to assist as needed, including but not limited to delivery, shipping, and autoclaving.
  • Familiarity with Workday and LIMS to be able to organize, schedule, and track the team’s daily external and internal deliveries. Track and order general lab supplies as inventory level fluctuates.
  • Conduct stockroom inventory verification of all supplies, both daily and monthly.  Track stockroom, lab usage versus external inventory orders, bringing trend issues to management’s attention. Monitor freezers bi-weekly based off an electronic system to assist with inventory control.
  • Act as a resource for faculty, researchers and staff for all issues pertaining to activities undertaken in the lab. This would include explaining equipment preventative maintenance, proper operation of shop and equipment, enforcing safety policies and other related topics.
  • Keep informed and educated of the latest trends and the latest developments in state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

The individual must be physically able to handle heavy pieces of equipment and materials up to 30 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or associate degree from a technical college, or three years of experience working with lab equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of lab equipment, and their use.
  • Proven history of maintaining a safe work environment and promoting an awareness of safety among the lab/shop users.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to assist in the coordination of multiple lab managers, their timing, and outside vendors.
  • Working knowledge of Workday.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the need to be service-oriented and detail-oriented.
  • Highly motivated team player with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of standard computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).


Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

Salary Range
$17.86 - $30.39 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
