Senior Research Scientist
Med-Structural Biology - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (24001989)
The Department of Structural Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is located in Biomedical Science Tower 3. We currently have twelve faculty members working in the fields of cryo-electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and biochemistry.
Job Summary
Serves as subject matter expert and conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various complex documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates, junior lab members, and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates high-level work and project development in collaboration with other specialists.
Essential Functions
Conducting molecular dynamics simulations and docking experiments on structures of the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2). Simulations will focus on the mechanism of neurotransmitter transport and the protonation state of residues involved in proton antiporting. Work together with PI or independently to perform complex computation work and technical analysis. Troubleshoot technical problems or design new procedures to circumvent problems.
The applicant should be highly motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, be able to prioritize multiple tasks, and will be encouraged to work independently. Strong interpersonal skills and judgement is essential. The successful applicant should have strong expertise in computer related skills (Linux, python, scripting). Most of all we are looking for applicants that are motivated to learn new technologies, take on new challenges, and develop innovative techniques and methods.
Organization of lab space, coordination with lab members, and presentation of data at lab meetings are essential. The candidate will assist the PI with experimental design, implementation of novel strategies, and manuscript/grant writing including figures.
Physical Effort
Ability to manipulate laboratory instruments and reagents to conduct experiments. Ability to move about the lab environment. Will require standing or sitting at lab benches for long periods of time.
