Overview:

The Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a senior scientist to lead a multi-disciplinary research group for a prospective microelectronics program. This new research program at ORNL will develop microelectronics solutions for the Post Moore Era. The thrust areas of this initiative include, but are not limited to, the following: topological electronics, analog electronics, and integrated photonics. With substantial institutional investments in equipment and facilities, as well as recent and expected increases in federal funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies, the microelectronics initiative is positioned to experience rapid growth. Building on this solid foundation, the successful candidate will develop ORNL capabilities to address key challenges associated with beyond CMOS hardware and associated software ecosystem. In addition, the candidate will support ORNL/ CCSD’s science agenda, will lead the effort to respond to new funding opportunities, and will guide the ongoing growth and development of the research staff that will carry out that agenda.  A successful initiative lead will build upon internal and external investments to cement ORNL’s status as a world-class research organization in microelectronics of the future.

 

This position will be part of the Beyond Moore Group within the Advanced Computing Systems Research Section in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM).

The Advanced Computing Systems Research Section explores the impact that fundamental changes in computing technologies and systems will have on the DOE and ORNL mission.

Our work has been sponsored by DOE, DARPA, NSF, and others, and has resulted in numerous awards including ACM Gordon Bell prizes, Best Paper awards, and Early Career recognition.

CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee high quality research in areas related to Microelectronics.
  • Collaborate with scientists in the Physics Division, Computational Sciences Division, Quantum Science Center, and other organizations at the laboratory to provide a unified vision and execution plan for microelectronics projects within Mentor early career research staff, postdocs, and students.
  •  ORNL.
  • Collaborate with the Quantum Science Center and the Center for Nanophase Materials (CNMS) at ORNL to facilitate team members’ ability to simulate fundamental materials science properties,
  • Collaborate with scientists outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, the Department of Energy, and other sponsors.
  • Mentor early career research staff, postdocs, and students.
  • Interact with the appropriate program offices and other agencies to develop and maintain program funding for basic and applied research in relevant areas.
  • Develop new research directions as a basis of continued funding and the overall health of the initiative.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related STEM discipline.

  • 6+ years of relevant research experience outside of degree.

  • Established track record of research in microelectronics.

  • Demonstrated success in program development.

  • Experience in leadership and management, including both staff and program leadership.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. and 10+ years of experience preferred. 

  • Extensive experience in developing, planning, organizing, leading, and managing activities of a major organizational unit within a major R&D facility, including a working knowledge of policies and guidelines that relate to administration and management of complex R&D organizations.
  • Extensive experience managing large projects with multi-million-dollar budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to microelectronics.
  • A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories.
  • Excellent communication skills and technical expertise at the highest levels of scientific enterprise.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams.
