The High Performance Research Computing (HPRC) group provides support and resources, mostly in a Linux cluster environment, for over 2000 scientific computing researchers across campus.  As the Senior Research Computing Security Engineer, you are the subject matter expert responsible for enhancing and maintaining the systems and cybersecurity as well as providing additional expertise requiring Windows environments and virtualization services and any specialized security requirements. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Eight years of experience in systems administration and/or security analysis
  • Must be U.S. Person as defined by U.S. export control regulations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Knowledge of IT architecture, project management, negotiation skills, basic vendor relations, advanced client relation skills, proposal writing, business acumen, persuasive communication, adaptability to change, team leadership skills, and quality assurance methodologies
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with a diverse range of people

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in an information technology field
  • Three years of Windows and Linux server administration experience
  • Three years of experience with managing Linux and Windows in virtualized environments
  • Experience with administering HPC environments such as HPC clusters and storage

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:  Security certifications from SANS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Administration of Linux and Windows in both virtualized and nonvirtualized environments
  • Experience with event and log monitoring, intrusion detection, and vulnerability scanning tools
  • Experience with shell programming and scripting languages
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA)
  • Knowledge of common information security management frameworks such as ISO/IEC 0800-171 and NIS


Responsibilities

  • Security Analysis - Develops and manages data, system, and network security architecture for all HPRC resources, including but not limited to HPRC clusters, storage, servers, virtual machines, laptops, and desktops. Coordinates enforcement and audits of security policies and procedures, such as access, breach escalation, use of firewalls, and encryption routines. Coordinates the administration and monitoring of data security profiles on all platforms.  Coordinates the enforcement of standards for procedures used to monitor the updates, maintenance, and documentation of security controls.  Ensures that information security strategies and processes meet all regulatory and business requirements so that the impacts of incidents are minimized. Oversees and coordinates security awareness programs and collaborates on the education of stakeholders on security policies and practices. Creates, evaluates, and approves plans for enterprise level standards for the implementation of new technology deployments and system integration testing. Coordinates the evaluation of new security technologies, services, and procedures. Makes technical recommendations to executive leadership.

  • Virtualization Administration - Manages Windows and Linux servers in virtualized environment. Provides open source and customized virtualized environments to accommodate the requirements of faculty, researchers, and students for compliant computing. Integrates virtualized environments with HPRC clusters.

  • HPC Administration - Provides expertise for the overall operation and management of the University's main HPC assets. Maintains documentation for HPC assets.

  • Incident Response - Coordinates the development of risk analysis scenarios and response procedures, and makes recommendations to executive leadership. Coordinates the administration and monitoring of data security profiles on multiple platforms and audits reviews of security violation reports and investigations of security exceptions. Oversees processes used to document and log information security incidents, responses, plans, methods, and procedures. Monitors and ensures completion of investigation reports. Ensures timely response and investigation efforts for security incidents, breaches, and forensics to meet all regulatory and business requirements and minimize their impact. Coordinates incident responses to include interacting with University IT security and law enforcement agencies. Participates in on-call incident response for data center events that affect HPC resources.
